TCU football isn't receiving the same preseason coronation as the Big 12's headline contenders.
That might be exactly what makes the Horned Frogs dangerous.

The growing attention surrounding TCU's regular-season finale at Texas Tech suggests analysts see more than a middle-of-the-pack team in Fort Worth.
They see a potential conference disruptor capable of arriving in Lubbock with something significant still on the line.
That's the central argument raised by the Locked On Horned Frogs podcast : When the TCU-Texas Tech matchup keeps appearing on lists of the Big 12's most compelling games, it's an acknowledgment that Sonny Dykes' team owns a higher ceiling than many preseason projections suggest.
The episode also identifies senior safety Jamel Johnson as a critical figure in determining whether the Frogs reach it.

The conference couldn't have built a better stage for the finale.
TCU will visit Texas Tech on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 26, for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN. It won't be buried in an overloaded Saturday window.
The Frogs and Red Raiders will have a national audience, a rivalry atmosphere and potentially massive Big 12 consequences.
Lubbock hasn't exactly terrified TCU, either. The Horned Frogs have won four of their last five road games against Texas Tech, claiming victories there in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021.
Of course, that matchup only becomes a championship-level event if TCU handles the road leading into it.

The Frogs must navigate conference trips to UCF, Baylor and Arizona while hosting BYU, West Virginia, Kansas, Kansas State and Utah. That's enough landmines to eliminate anyone who starts looking ahead too early.
Johnson could be the player who keeps the defense steady through that grind.
The 6-1, 205-pound safety earned a spot on the 2026 Preseason All-Big 12 Team after starting all 13 games last season. Johnson finished 2025 with 96 tackles, three tackles for loss and a team-leading five interceptions.
His flair for late-game destruction was obvious against SMU. Johnson intercepted two passes during the final five minutes, helping TCU close out a 35-24 Iron Skillet victory after the Frogs had trailed in the fourth quarter.

Now comes the harder assignment: doing it every week while becoming the unmistakable centerpiece of the defense.

TCU doesn't need preseason voters to believe it's a Big 12 contender. It needs to keep winning until the rest of the conference has no choice.
That Thanksgiving trip won't make the Frogs dangerous. It could reveal that they were dangerous all along.
