The NFL trade deadline is quickly approaching and teams around the league are already making moves to improve their rosters for the second half of the season. With the Los Angeles Chargers sitting at 0-6, the focus is beginning to shift toward what the team could do before the deadline rather than how it can turn its season around.
The Chargers entered the season with legitimate playoff aspirations, but those expectations have quickly disappeared. Now, with other teams looking to make a push toward the postseason, general manager Joe Hortiz will have some important decisions to make. Several players on the roster could draw interest from teams looking for help, and it would not be surprising to see Los Angeles receive calls about some of its more established veterans and younger contributors.

Khalil Mack is arguably the most obvious trade candidate. The veteran pass rusher remains a valuable piece for a team looking to improve its defense for a playoff run. Mack is also in the final year of his contract, making this an opportunity for the Chargers to potentially receive draft compensation rather than risk losing him without getting anything in return. While moving on from a player of his caliber would certainly hurt the defense, it is difficult to justify keeping him if the team has no realistic chance of competing this season.
Kimani Vidal is another name worth watching. The running back has shown flashes of what he can do, but his role in the offense has been limited as the Chargers have divided opportunities in the backfield. With other teams potentially looking for help at running back, Vidal could be an appealing option because of his production and relatively affordable contract. The Chargers would need to determine whether his long-term value to the team outweighs what another organization might be willing to offer.
There are other players who could generate interest as well. Donte Jackson could appeal to teams looking for help in the secondary, while Quentin Johnston could be an intriguing option for a contender looking to add another receiver. Bud Dupree and other veterans could also become part of the conversation depending on what offers come across Hortiz's desk. Reports have already identified several of these players as potential names to monitor ahead of the deadline.
Of course, the Chargers should not trade players simply for the sake of making moves. They need to receive reasonable compensation and avoid creating additional holes that will take years to address. However, with the season heading in the wrong direction, acquiring extra draft picks and giving younger players more opportunities should be serious considerations.

The biggest question is whether Hortiz is willing to acknowledge the reality of the situation. The organization may not want to admit that the season is lost, but the results on the field have made it increasingly difficult to argue otherwise. Holding onto every veteran in hopes of an unlikely turnaround could ultimately leave the Chargers in a worse position moving forward.
The trade deadline presents an opportunity to begin reshaping the roster and preparing for next season. With other teams already making moves, all eyes will be on the Chargers to see whether they finally decide to become sellers. If the right offers arrive, standing pat could be a bigger mistake than moving on from a few familiar faces.
