“These teams are unwatchable right now” - Tracy McGrady singles out the Wizards and Nets as the reasons why the NBA should not expand

Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady again shared his opposition to the NBA's proposal to add two more teams to the league during the NBA on NBC pregame show on Sunday night. According to T-Mac, he isn't opposed to allowing more players to play in the NBA by adding two more full rosters.

However, with how many teams are tanking this season, he insisted that the league does not have enough talent to carry teams.

"To me, I don't think we have the talent. I'm just gonna be honest, I've been on record saying that, I'm going to say that today. I don't think we have the talent to start two more teams. The NBA is looking at this as getting more money for the NBA, which they are gonna do, but I'm just looking at teams like the Brooklyn Nets, I hate to say these teams, the Washington Wizards. These teams are unwatchable right now," he said .

The Nets and Wizards are in full tank mode

The Nets officially went into rebuild mode when they traded Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks for a number of first-round picks. This summer, the Nets also traded Cam Johnson for Michael Porter Jr . Porter Jr. was playing at an All-Star level earlier this season, but without any support, his efforts went for naught.

He has not played since mid-March with a hamstring strain. At 18-57 this season, the Nets have the third-worst record in the league.

Meanwhile, the Wizards are one-half game worse than the Nets in the team standings. Washington also traded its key players to acquire Trae Young and Anthony Davis , both All-Star players who have been limited by injuries this season.

The Wizards were controversial earlier this month for allowing Bam Adebayo to score 83 points in a single game. Washington is currently 17-57 and next-to-last in the team standings.

"Yes, I played for expansion teams. Is there talent coming out of college?" McGrady added. "There are. But it's just more to me, guys being able to score points. To be able to carry a franchise brings a whole different dynamic. I'm not saying there aren't guys out there, but when I'm watching the NBA right now, and looking at the amount of teams that are tanking, that tells me there's not enough talent."

The NBA has started exploring the possibility of expansion

Just recently, the NBA Board of Governors voted to approve exploring the league adding two more teams, reportedly in Las Vegas and Seattle. But while this is still the initial stage of the NBA's possible expansion, Hall of Famer Reggie Miller thinks Vegas and Seattle are as good as approved already.

"I think Vegas is a foregone conclusion. I think Seattle is a foregone conclusion," he began. "We never should have left Seattle in the first place. It is a great fanbase, as we just witnessed on Super Bowl Sunday, how they travel and how they've been for their football team"…

"And that fan base is just absolutely awesome they would be on fire to be back in the league. So I think those two teams, it's a foregone conclusion that the owners will hold on to that and we'll have two new teams," Reggie added .

At the end of the day, the NBA is a business and although it wants to keep the league competitive, the financial bottom line almost always matters more. McGrady himself said there is talent coming out of college, just not the generational type.

But the 2026 NBA Draft is loaded with talent, featuring 3, 4 or 5 future franchise cornerstones. So maybe Tracy wants to wait until after the June Draft to say whether there isn't enough superstar talent in the NBA.
