Dylan Stewart's strip sack fumble on Tennessee quarterback George MacIntyre essentially won the game for South Carolina last weekend against the Volunteers.
Tennessee did what it needed to do for most of the game last Saturday to get a win over South Carolina.
But the Vols didn't do everything they needed to do, and that's why they left Williams-Brice Stadium with a 27-24 loss.
Tennessee made too many mistakes ( the penalties were a killer ) to win a tough game on the road.
One of the mistakes that everyone is talking about this week is Vols right tackle Jesse Perry getting left one-on-one with South Carolina star pass rusher Dylan Stewart on the Vols' final offensive play.
Stewart quickly beat Perry inside and was able to hit Vols quarterback George MacIntyre and force the fumble.
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer said this week on Gamecock Football that his coaching staff saw on film that they could attack Perry inside in this game.
Beamer also pointed out that Vols left tackle David Sanders Jr. got beat on the play.
"This is where the sack came from here on No. 72 (Perry)," said Beamer. "We felt like we had a really good opportunity to beat that guy inside. That's where we really wanted to attack 72, their right tackle, this week. It was a great pass rush. You see Dylan get his hands inside, knock back, and then rips right through and is able to hit the quarterback. But the best thing I love, too, is even if Dylan doesn't make the sack, Anthony Addison is about to knock the ball out over here on the other side because once again he beats the left tackle."
I don't know why Perry was left one-on-one in that situation. I don't know if it was because of the play-call, poor communication, or a missed assignment.
Whatever the reason, it's something that doesn't need to happen again in that kind of situation.
Because if South Carolina saw that they could beat Perry inside in a one-on-one situation, then other teams are going to see that as well.
That's something that Tennessee needs to come up with an answer for in November. It's getting to that point in the season where one play could determine whether or not the Vols reach the College Football Playoff.
