The Brooklyn Nets may have a roster decision to make this season, and Terance Mann is one player who could become part of that conversation.
Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley recently named Mann as the one player the Nets should trade this season in a piece identifying a potential trade candidate for every NBA team . While Brooklyn has reasons to give its roster time to develop, Mann's contract and place on the team make him an interesting name to watch.

Mann is set to make $31.5 million over the next two seasons, a significant commitment for a player coming off the worst statistical season of his career since his rookie year. In 2025-26, the Brooklyn native averaged 7.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 24.3 minutes per game, shooting 45.7% from the field and 36.4% from three-point range.
He also recorded career highs in turnovers and fouls per game, highlighting some of the difficulties he experienced during his first season with the Nets.
Mann came to Brooklyn hoping to show he could offer more than he had earlier in his career. He got more opportunities to handle the ball and create for teammates, but the results suggested he might be better suited to an off-ball role.
That could become an issue this season. With Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. among Brooklyn's offensive options, the Nets have more players capable of creating their own shots and generating opportunities for others. If the younger players continue to improve, Mann could have a harder time finding consistent minutes.

Still, there are reasons not to give up on him just yet.
Before joining Brooklyn in the 2025 offseason, Mann had a productive 30-game stretch with the Atlanta Hawks. He averaged 9.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while shooting 54.1% from the field and 38.6% from three-point range.
If Mann can get back to that level of efficiency, he could be a useful contributor for the Nets. His experience also has value on a roster filled with young players who are still learning how to compete at the NBA level.
The bigger question might be what Brooklyn can get out of his contract. As Buckley pointed out, Mann would be unlikely to command much in a trade by himself, but his salary could help the Nets put together a larger deal involving a more expensive player. That could give Brooklyn another way to improve its roster without requiring Mann to be the centerpiece of a return.

Roster flexibility is another factor worth considering. The Nets currently have 15 players occupying standard roster spots, so promoting a two-way player would require an opening.
Chaney Johnson could eventually be part of that discussion.
Johnson has impressed with his work ethic and defensive versatility, earning praise from teammate Egor Demin after a recent game. Demin called Johnson the hardest-working player in the gym and said he believes his teammate will eventually develop into a standard-contract player.
At 6-foot-8, Johnson has the size, strength, and athleticism to defend multiple positions. His ability to make life difficult for opposing players, including bigger frontcourt opponents, could give the Nets another reason to find room for him on the standard roster if his development continues.

Of course, Johnson still has to earn that promotion, and Brooklyn does not need to make a trade simply to create a spot before the opportunity presents itself. But if he continues to impress, the front office could eventually face a difficult decision about how to use its available roster spots.
That is where Mann's situation becomes particularly interesting. He is an experienced NBA player who can contribute in the right role, but his contract is a considerable investment if the Nets cannot consistently get enough production out of him.
Brooklyn should give the season some time to unfold before making any major decisions. If Mann finds his footing and becomes a reliable part of the rotation, keeping him could make sense. If his role remains limited, however, the Nets may be better off exploring what his salary could help them accomplish in a trade.
Mann is not necessarily a player Brooklyn needs to move, but he could become one of its more practical trade options as the February deadline approaches.
