There are bad trades, franchise-altering trades, and then there is the Miami Marlins' abhorrent offseason in 2017-18. In what became the very definition of a hardball 'fire sale', the Fosh cast out three outfielders who could have anchored a dangerous lineup for years.
Nearly nine seasons later, how much further along might the franchise be if it had kept them together? Could that core have set off another World Series celebration in South Florida? Based on how their careers have turned out since, the answer sure seems like a resounding yes .

Giancarlo Stanton was coming off a historic campaign, winning the National League Most Valuable Player Award after blasting 59 home runs and driving in 132 runs. Marcell Ozuna had authored a career year, batting .312 with 37 homers and 124 RBIs while earning a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger.
Christian Yelich was the youngest of the trio at that season; he was just 26 years old. But he was coming off a terrific year, hitting .282 with 18 home runs, 81 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases, with his peak years still ahead. Together, the three produced 114 home runs and 337 RBIs in 2017—a strong base rather than a finished roster.
Finishing 2017 at 77-85, Miami was far from a championship contender. The Marlins could have bolstered their pitching and roster depth to give the core a real shot. Instead, they dismantled it: Stanton went to the New York Yankees, Ozuna to the St. Louis Cardinals , and Yelich to the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Ashes after the Fire
By the time the smoke cleared, Miami had traded four of its five top-value players from the previous year, and the financial motivations were clear. In December 2017, Commissioner Rob Manfred even faced backlash during a Dan Le Batard interview regarding whether MLB was aware of the new ownership's plan to slash payroll.

Citing Miami Herald reporting at the time, the new owners intended to reduce payroll from around $115 million down to the $85 million to $90 million range, reinforcing the idea that cost-cutting took priority over competing.
Retaining the star trio would not have guaranteed a title, as pitching and depth remained glaring needs. Yet, Miami opted not to bother seeing what that nucleus could achieve. Yelich captured an MVP in Milwaukee, Stanton maintained his elite power in New York, and Ozuna remained a productive bat in St. Louis and Atlanta.
Though the Marlins made a postseason appearance in 2023, they have yet to establish any form of sustained success. They have always built their championship squads quickly, only to disassemble them with the same speed. And they've been swimming in circles since making these moves nine years ago.
While the 2017–18 fire sale does not account for every misstep the Marlins make in modern days, it stripped the franchise of three premier building blocks. What they could have meant to the team and the city was lost forever, leaving Miami searching for answers and wondering what might have been.
