Texas A&M HC Mike Elko speaks to the media after first padded practice

Texas A&M is only a few practices into spring ball, and while it’s far too early to draw meaningful conclusions, the increased access under Mike Elko has been a welcome change for fans eager for any offseason football insight.

Right now, the priority is simple. Get the newcomers acclimated to the system, the tempo, and the standard Elko expects. The head coach spent much of the early sessions moving between position groups, taking his first full‑pad look at the roster. He likes the direction, but he’s clear-eyed about how far they still have to go.

"I'm happy with the progress that we made. I don't want it to come out like I'm not. But when you're comparing it to a wanting to be a playoff team and where you know this thing needs to go to be successful three practices in the spring, it's not there yet."

One reason for the number of new faces this spring is the volume of draft‑eligible Aggies. Texas A&M could see up to ten players selected, with several more earning camp invitations. It's a reflection of the program’s development pipeline. That turnover sets the stage for a heavily attended Pro Day .

"It's a huge day for for some of the guys who didn't get to the combine. It's a day to finish up for some of the guys who did. And so, um, I just think it's really cool to see where our program has elevated to in such a short period of time, um, from an NFL development standpoint. And so, um, to have, you know, we'll be represented by all 32 NFL organizations tomorrow. I think we've got like six or seven general managers coming, uh, a handful of head coaches coming. And so, um, yeah, it's just exciting."

While it’s too early to glean much from the on‑field work, this stage of spring is ideal for identifying the questions that will matter later. Questions about depth, development, and how the roster begins to take shape as practices stack up.
