Texas A&M LB makes his case for NFL teams during Shrine Bowl practices

This weekend, five former Texas A&M starters, who departed the program after the 2025 season, will take part in next Tuesday's annual East-West Shrine Game, including linebacker Taurean York , who started at middle linebacker while calling defensive plays since his 2023 freshman season.

One of the more trusted and cerebral players in the SEC, the only thing stopping the Temple, Texas native from becoming a starter in the NFL is the one thing he can't control: his size. After the official measurements revealed York's height at 5'10" and 232 pounds, mass isn't an issue, but his overall fit is more scheme-specific and will likely be a situational backer during his rookie year.

Similar to senior edge Cashius Howell's short arms, the "perfect prospect" does not exist in this year's 2026 NFL Draft, but scouts have plenty of film over the past three seasons to watch where Taurean York excells, and from someone who has covered his entire Texas A&M career, York's ability in zone coverage, paired with this elite instincts against the screens.

On Friday, several Shrine Bowl attendees , including Taurean York, spoke to the media in attendance, and with all the noise surrounding his undersized frame, the three-year starter provided a rundown of his accomplishments, including 39 straight starts, while racking up 228 tackles, 6.5 sacks, an interception, and seven pass deflections.

Per Pro Football Focus , York earned career-high grades in on defense (83.6), run defense (74), and an elite coverage grade (90.8), which should serve him well at the next level, especially in third-down situations. Wherever York ends up landing, I have full confidence he will work his way within a rotation sooner rather than later.
