Texas A&M senior DB already impressing at new position this spring
Texas A&M's 2026 secondary will feature new names at cornerback and safety, while former starting safety Bryce Anderson , who briefly entered the transfer portal before making his way back to campus, will compete for the starting nickel position after veteran Tyreek Chappell departed after five seasons in College Station.
Coach Mike Elko and new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill run a man-heavy scheme that requires their cornerbacks to play tight coverage and limit explosive plays, while the nickel spot is crucial to preventing catch-and-run opportunities, something Texas A&M's wide receiver rotation thrived on during the 2025 season.
Replacing Chappell's experience will be tough, but Anderson and junior corner Jordan Shaw will continue to battle for the starting nickel job this spring, heading into the summer, and so far, Anderson has reportedly shone in his new role, bringing his elite athleticism and nose for the football back to the secondary after missing all but three games last season due to his head injury that kept him sidelined long-term.
During Texas A&M's last spring practice, Anderson's interception, a near one-handed grab, wasn't just impressive; it is a positive sign that the senior defensive back is 100% healthy and ready to compete in 2026, six years after his nearly career-ending injury.
Anderson's best season came during the 2023 season, finishing with a career-high 55 tackles, 1.5 sacks, four pass deflections, and an interception as one of the defense's most reliable starters. While his play dropped off, this position change should result in a resurgence, with a focus on his strength in man coverage and open-field tackling against the run.
