- Texas A&M senior DB is 'in the mix' for the starting nickel role

Texas A&M's 2026 secondary is by far the deepest unit on the roster, and knowing third-year coach Mike Elko's development background at cornerback and safety, the expectations should be through the roof at both positions heading into the new season. Through 14 preseason practices, replacing veteran nickel Tyreek Chappell has been one of the closer battles, centered around former safety Bryce Anderson and former Washington transfer Jordan Shaw .
However, veteran cornerback Bravion Rogers , a former blue-chip recruit who has been a special teams ace for the Aggies during most of his career, recorded an interception last week, and, according to AggieYell insider Jaxson Callaway, Rogers is still in contention for the starting nickel job, even though Jordan Shaw, who served as Chappell's backup last season, has held on tight to the job for most of fall camp.
Mike Elko and new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill's heavy man coverage scheme requires cornerbacks to keep their composure and match opposing receivers step for step, especially in the middle of the field, where the nickel position demands speed, quickness, agility, and physical toughness to cover the slot and tackle in space.
Bryce Anderson's background as a high school quarterback and long-time safety, combined with Rogers' size and speed, gives Elko and Hemphill a deep nickel rotation that simply wasn't there over the last two seasons, when Chappell dealt with injuries.
"Rogers is absolutely in the mix for the starting nickel role, but the latest intel suggests that Jordan Shaw will hold onto that spot from last season. It's also important to note that Bryce Anderson is now at nickel and has been working to insert himself into the mix there, too."
Cornerbacks Dezz Ricks , Julio Humphrey, transfer Rickey Gibson, and Adonyss Currie have all shone this preseason, while the safety rotation, led by Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe, now features Colorado transfer Tawfiq Byard, who is also poised to make an immediate impact.
