(USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect)
Texas Tech's defense created turnovers, scored a touchdown and gave its offense opportunities to recover Saturday. It also surrendered the long runs and sustained scoring drives that made those opportunities insufficient.
The No. 8 Red Raiders allowed 255 rushing yards and five offensive touchdowns in a 37-24 loss to Cincinnati at Nippert Stadium, ending their unbeaten start and dropping them to 6-1.

The most damaging stretch came in the second quarter, when Cincinnati scored three touchdowns to turn a 6-3 deficit into a 24-6 halftime lead. The final touchdown followed a 75-yard drive that took just 26 seconds.
Tech's defensive performance contained enough productive plays to complicate the evaluation. But its failures came in situations where one stop could have changed the game.
Cincinnati running back Cole Tabb finished with 173 yards on 16 carries, averaging 10.8 yards per attempt.
Two runs were particularly costly: a 51-yard burst in the closing seconds of the first half and a 58-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Those two carries accounted for 109 yards, more than 40 percent of Cincinnati's rushing total. Their timing made them even more damaging.
The first set up a touchdown just before halftime. The second pushed Cincinnati's lead to 37-18 after Tech had cut the deficit to 13 points.
The immediate corrective priority is preventing ordinary rushing plays from becoming scoring opportunities. Tech needed its initial run fits and its pursuit behind the play to work together. On those two snaps, Cincinnati gained enough ground to change the game before the Red Raiders could recover.
Quarterback JC French IV added another challenge with his legs. He finished with 46 net rushing yards despite being sacked three times, including gains of 14 and 22 yards on second-quarter touchdown possessions.

Cincinnati took possession at its own 25 with 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Tabb immediately ran 51 yards to the Tech 24. French followed an incompletion with a 22-yard run to the 2, then found Lyviel Waters for a touchdown.
The Bearcats needed five plays and 26 seconds to travel 75 yards.
Tech's offense contributed to the situation with an interception on the preceding possession. But Cincinnati still had the entire field to negotiate and very little time.
Allowing runs of 51 and 22 yards in that circumstance was a major situational failure. Keeping either runner contained could have forced Cincinnati to settle for a field-goal attempt or run out of time. Instead, Tech entered halftime trailing by 18.

French threw for only 172 yards, and his longest completion covered 17 yards. He nevertheless finished with four touchdown passes.
The scoring throws covered 4, 5, 2 and 17 yards.
That distinction matters. Cincinnati built its lead through rushing production and sustained possessions, then converted its opportunities near the end zone. Tech could limit the vertical passing game without solving the larger problem.
The Bearcats' five touchdown drives covered 85, 55, 75, 80 and 75 yards. Their offense repeatedly demonstrated that it could travel meaningful distances against the Red Raiders.
Cincinnati converted only four of 13 third-down attempts and one of three fourth-down tries. Tech also intercepted French twice.

Those are useful defensive results. The individual conversions, however, reveal why the overall percentages provide an incomplete picture.
During Cincinnati's second touchdown drive, French gained seven yards on third-and-9. The Bearcats then converted fourth-and-2 with a 17-yard completion to Zylan Perry.
Later, with Tech trailing 24-15, Cincinnati assembled a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. A 16-yard completion to Larenzo Fenner on third-and-5 helped sustain that possession before Fenner caught the 17-yard scoring pass.
Tech repeatedly reached situations where a stop was available. Cincinnati converted enough of the important ones to maintain control.

Peyton Morgan's 53-yard interception return for a touchdown helped pull Tech within nine points in the third quarter. Amier Boyd added another interception shortly afterward, giving the Red Raiders a genuine opening.
The offense failed to capitalize on Boyd's takeaway, ending that possession with a missed field goal.
Tech finished with just one offensive touchdown, scored with a minute remaining. Its offense went three of 15 on third down, and the team lost three turnovers.

That context prevents a fair assessment from placing the entire defeat on the defense. Still, the defensive corrections are clear: contain explosive runs, account for quarterback rushing threats, finish possessions and protect the field in late-half situations.
Texas Tech produced defensive highlights Saturday. Cincinnati produced the scoring drives that decided the game.
