- Texas Tech Proved the Doubters Wrong With Historic 2025 Run
Texas Tech football entered the 2025 season carrying more pressure than almost any program in the Big 12. Joey McGuire's Red Raiders had money, facilities, transfers and expectations. What they didn't have was universal belief.
As RedRaidersWire pointed out, by December, none of that mattered.

Texas Tech finished 12-2, won its first Big 12 championship and reached the College Football Playoff, turning one of the boldest roster-building gambles in college football into the greatest season in program history .
The groundwork had been obvious.
Texas Tech attacked the transfer portal with 21 additions and backed the roster overhaul with serious NIL resources through The Matador Club.
A new $242 million football facility only added to the sense that the Red Raiders weren't interested in slowly building toward contention.

They wanted it immediately.
Still, plenty of national analysts remained skeptical.
Athlon Sports placed Texas Tech third in the Big 12 preseason race. Pro Football Focus was far less impressed, ranking the Red Raiders No. 53 nationally and projecting just 7.36 wins.
Its model gave Tech only a 5.7 percent chance to win the Big 12 and an 8.59 percent probability of reaching the CFP.
That aged badly.
Texas Tech ripped through the regular season at 11-1 and arrived in its first Big 12 Championship Game with a defense that had become far more dominant than even optimistic projections suggested.
That unit delivered its masterpiece against BYU .

The Red Raiders held the Cougars to just 200 total yards in a 34-7 demolition. Linebacker Ben Roberts intercepted two passes and earned championship-game MVP honors as Texas Tech captured its first conference championship since 1955 and its first as a member of the Big 12.
The win earned Tech the No. 4 seed and a first-round CFP bye.
The season eventually ended with a harsh reality check, a 23-0 Orange Bowl loss to Oregon . But one ugly night didn't erase everything that came before it.
David Bailey , Lee Hunter , Jacob Rodriguez and the rest of a ferocious defense helped transform Texas Tech from an offseason curiosity into a national contender.

That's what makes the 2025 Red Raiders such a useful reminder heading into another preseason full of projections.

Money didn't guarantee Texas Tech anything. Neither did portal rankings, facilities or hype.
The Red Raiders still had to prove it on Saturdays. They did — and made a lot of preseason spreadsheets look ridiculous along the way.
