NFL analyst Emmanuel Acho didn't like the Buffalo Bills' decision to release veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday, a day after he completed his one-game suspension for spitting in the direction of Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers.
On Speakeasy, Acho expressed his disappointment with the Bills' decision, calling Gardner-Johnson an "enforcer" as compared to other players on the field for Buffalo.
"I don't know if I agree because you might need Chauncey to win it all," Acho said. "I think you need an enforcer. The Bills do not have an enforcer on that defense."
Acho mentioned Terrell Bernard, Ed Oliver, Greg Rousseau and Dorian Williams as "good players, but not an enforcer." He suggested that having Gardner-Johnson strikes fear in the opposition.
"You need somebody who's going to make Houshmandzadeh hesitate to come across the middle," Acho continued. "He's still going to run across the middle, but you need somebody who's going to make him hesitate."
Acho explained the role of an enforcer on different teams.
"For the Chiefs, it's Chris Jones," Acho added. "For the Seahawks, I told you, it's Witherspoon. For the Eagles, it was Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. To some degree, it's Jalen Carter. Every team needs an enforcer… When the Rams lost Aaron Donald, they lost their enforcer. It's not Nate Landman. It's not Kam Curl. It's not Kitchens. It's not Trent McDuffie. It's not Jaylen Watson. It's Aaron Donald. When you lost Aaron Donald, no wonder the defense started to tank. You don't have an enforcer."
According to Acho, keeping an "enforcer" like Gardner-Johnson could have helped the Bills in the playoffs and other tough situations.
Why Bills Released Veteran C.J. Gardner-Johnson
According to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe , inconsistent on-field play played a bigger role in C.J. Gardner-Johnson's release than disciplinary issues.
Gardner-Johnson, who signed a one-year, $6 million contract with Buffalo in March, recorded 26 tackles, two passes defended and one interception in six games this season.
Buffalo used the open roster spot to sign DB Te'Cory Couch to the active roster on Oct. 31. Couch will remain on the 53-man roster while Gardner-Johnson is released. Damar Hamlin started in Gardner-Johnson's place against Baltimore and is expected to take on a larger role alongside Cole Bishop.
