Every San Francisco 49ers fan will say the same thing when asked the most frustrating part of the past two years: the injuries. This trend has continued into 2026, as they've dealt with an uncanny amount in training camp, especially at wide receiver. If this persists, the group will look entirely different next year as they seek reliable options in the 2027 NFL Draft. If they do, Kyle Shanahan must consider these three reliable, ironman receivers.
Before we begin, it's important to define an ironman receiver. In this instance, they are someone who hasn't suffered a major reported injury in college. Meaning, they haven't missed a game and have been consistently available for an offense, something the 49ers haven't had in years.
With that cleared up, let's dive into three ironman receivers the 49ers should target next offseason.
KJ Duff- Rutgers
Few receivers are built like KJ Duff. The six-foot-six, 225-pound junior uses his otherworldly physicality and athleticism to dominate defenders at the catch point. He has superb timing and consistently highpoints the ball, using his iron-clad hands to snatch the pigskin and finish the catch.
Beyond this, he has surprising speed and can create separation with his route running. He isn't a route artist, nor is any six-foot-six receiver, but he doesn't solely rely on contested catches. Additionally, he understands how to stem defenders and uses their leverage against them.
Duff's frame also mitigates the risk of injury. He's able to take contact, and his muscular frame naturally absorbs it, lessening the impact. Obviously, he's not immune, but it will decrease the chances in the NFL, which is all the 49ers can ask for.
Cooper Barkate- Miami
No receiver in the league is smarter than Cooper Barkate. He isn't a superhuman athlete and won't burn anyone with his vertical speed, but he finds a way. He's an exceptional route runner and expertly varies his tempo and implements headfakes into his routes. This makes it challenging for defenders to stay in his pocket.
Barkate's at his best against zone coverage. He has a natural ability to find soft spots in the zone, where he sits down and makes himself an option for the quarterback. He's as consistent as they come and is a quarterback's best friend.
Barkate isn't a major RAC threat, which means he doesn't take as many hits. This has kept him injury-free so far in his five-year career and will undoubtedly excite the 49ers.
Isaiah Sategna III- Oklahoma
Nothing about Isaiah Sategna indicates an injury-free player. Unlike the previous two, he doesn't have a huge frame, standing 5-foot-10 and weighing 185 pounds, and is extremely dynamic after the catch. Yet, he's avoided any serious injuries and has stayed on the field.
Sategna pairs blazing vertical speed with swift short-area quickness that makes him nearly impossible to bring down in open space. This ability is evident both after the catch and in kick/punt returns. He's an outstanding athlete and frequently runs away from defenders.
Beyond this, he's a great route runner. His breaks are snappy, especially on in-breaking routes, which creates instant separation. He has an expansive route tree and keeps defenders guessing. He's a well-rounded player who will be an impactful presence in the NFL.
