With the season winding down, it's shaping up to be yet another stretch run where the Washington Nationals will be looking forward to next year instead of October.
Though they have not yet been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, the odds of the Nats securing a spot in the bracket are nearly zero. At 67-75, it's not looking like the nation's capital will be watching any postseason baseball.

Thus, it's that time of year when Nationals fans look ahead to next season, and the promise the future can bring.
It's no secret that James Wood, CJ Abrams and Daylen Lile will play big roles for Washington in 2027 and beyond. But what other position players have earned at least a shot at being featured pieces going forward?
Jacob Young, OF, 27 years old
While he may be the least famous of Washington's under-30 outfielders, Jacob Young has quietly had a very productive 2026 campaign.
Through 124 games, the 27 year old has slashed .249/.316/.394. It's not the most impressive statistical profile, good for an OPS+ of 95 (100 represents league-average), but it is a marked improvement from his two other seasons of 100 or more games played: Young finished with an 85 OPS+ in 2024 and a 65 in 2025.

He has also improved across the board in underlying statistics that portend better future results. He has so far posted career-highs in strikeout rate and isolated power, and he currently holds a better walk rate than his career average.
On top of that, Young's ten home runs are far and away his career high, surpassing the previous, and admittedly low, high-water mark of three.
Beyond what he does with the bat, Young is a speed demon and an excellent. He has consistently been good for north of 20 steals, a mark he could easily surpass this season, has elite sprint speed, and has accumulated 11 Statcast outs above average -- a 98th percentile mark.
There will always be room on a roster for a fast, high-effort player with a plus-plus glove. Young is that player, and if he can continue improving offensively he can possibly be even more.

Harry Ford, C, 23 years old
Harry Ford's inclusion on a list like this is a bit obvious. He was one of the Nationals' top prospects, and that type of hype doesn't usually just disappear.
Predictable as it may be, though, the 23-year-old catcher is absolutely a piece of Washington's future.
Ford wasn't anything special in his 26 Major League games in 2026, but he showcased real potential. He was just below league average in OPS+ (a good outcome for a catcher), has shown good plate discipline and proved he can hold his own defensively behind the plate.
There are certainly elements of his game that need work, such as his high strikeout rate and lack of consistently high-quality contact, but the promise is real. Look for Ford to cement a place in Washington's future plans in 2027.

Brady House, 3B, 23 years old
The riskiest name to include on this list, third baseman Brady House has probably earned himself at least a bit more time to prove he can be an option for Washington going forward.
House hasn't exactly ran away with a long-term role in 2026. Early on in the season, he was demoted to the minors early in the season after a lackluster start, and only really worked his way back up after Curtis Mead was shipped to the Red Sox.
Recently, though, House has shown some of the promise that had Nats fans excited coming into the year.
In his last ten games, the 23-year-old has batted .273, hit a homer and drawn five walks. It's nothing to write home about, but it's far better than the offensive showing he put on to start the campaign.

The biggest obstacle for House will be the stable of young infield talent coming up through the farm system: Eli Willits, Seaver King, Devin Fitz-Gerald and others are surely working their way towards big-league breakthroughs.
But House should have a bit of leash left. Time will tell what he does with it.
