The New York Giants have blown away all expectations and are now heading into their bye week.
After the season-ending injury to Jaxson Dart , followed by even more year-long injuries to Brian Burns and Tremaine Edmunds , all hope felt lost.
Yet the Giants continue to persevere — they are firmly in first place in the NFC East with a 4-2-1 record and are in shape to win the division for the first time since 2011 .
With the laundry list of roadblocks faced so far, there have been major surprises that have allowed them to keep their stride.
Before the 2026 season, New York's defensive back talent was one of the biggest worries, but it's become a strength. To headline the success is former first-rounder Deonte Banks .
Banks, who seemed to be on his way out after disastrous second and third seasons, has been a true lockdown corner. He's on pace for his lowest yards allowed, completion percentage and the most pass deflections in his career. Most recently, he completely shut down Pro Bowler Nico Collins , holding him to just one catch for four yards on 14 snaps.
He's always been able to keep up with anyone, but now Banks is finally turning his head around on time , attacking the ball ferociously. His physical gifts and newfound poise have made him one of the NFL's top breakout players.
Beyond Banks, the group has shown strong improvement under the new coaching regime. According to NFLPro, in nickel formation (five defensive backs), the Giants allow the 10th-fewest pass yards per play ( 5.5 ).
Safety Jevon Holland is also creating a strong Pro Bowl campaign. He has three interceptions (tied for first), two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. Holland's electric closing on the ball has led to his lowest completion percentage by far: 36.8% .
This group's success will remain pivotal with the injured front seven.
Though many of the Giants' new coaches have improved the team, defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson may be at the top of the thank-you list.
The unit is still far from perfect, but the leaps made this season are very noteworthy. The Giants allow 5.3 yards per play and have already forced nine turnovers, ranking in the top half of the league.
Wilson's blitz-heavy philosophy has meshed excellently with the G-Men. NFLPro lists them blitzing on 40.3% of dropbacks, the sixth most in the league. When blitzing, they have an EPA/pass (expected points added per pass) of -0.10 , also ranking in the top 10.
These heavy blitz packages leave the Giants running a heavy dose of man coverage. Their man coverage on 55% of passes ranks second. Both their blitz and man percentages are 10%+ increases from last season.
The defensive backs' previously stated success is greatly benefited from these schemes. It allows them to rely on their athletic gifts and stay physical with their matchups.
Up front, the extra rushers have also clearly helped, especially without Dexter Lawrence . There's now a lack of extra blockers to account for star edge rusher Abdul Carter ; it's helped him maintain his monstrous quick pressure rate from last season even without the presence of Brian Burns . Carter's 16 quick pressures (pressures <2.5 seconds) are the fifth best in the NFL.
Dennard Wilson's scheme has let the defensive stars shine and fully unlocked their suppressed gifts.
Whether it's their midseason quarterback acquisition or the Day 1 and 2 2026 draft picks, offensive newcomers on the New York team are making their presence felt.
In a quite shocking development, J.J. McCarthy has been a big-play machine in his five quarters as the Giants' quarterback.
Against the Houston Texans, McCarthy was as good as any New York fan could ask. His 252 yards on 20/28 passing came from multiple accurate passes downfield, keeping the ball out of harm's way and focusing on getting the ball to the offense's best player: Malik Nabers .
There's still room for improvement all-around, but his first start in Big Blue leaves an exciting outlook for the rest of the season.
As for the rookies Francis Mauigoa and Malachi Fields , there are substantial positives.
The No. 10 pick, Mauigoa, has had growing pains moving to right guard, but the talent is clear. He's had multiple zero-pressure games so far and has reps of pure manhandling. He was the only rookie to post a 100% pass-block win rate in Week 7, already showing growth.
Fields had his best game as a pro against Houston. His four catches for 83 yards were momentous, headlined by his 47-yard catch-and-run. Fields' gifted YAC ability and smooth hands leave him as a viable safety valve at all times. The team has sorely missed a body type like his, and his 6-foot-4 frame has unlocked exciting play types for the Giants on both the run and through the air.
Each of these players has added a compelling new layer to the G-Men's offense and offers an exhilarating outlook for the team when it's fully healthy in 2027.
