1. Offensive Line Struggles Continue

Entering the season, Washington's offensive line was very vocal about its aspirations for the season, including competing for the Joe Moore Award, which is given to the nation's best offensive line. Through four games, the group hasn't come anywhere close to being in that conversation, with its worst performance of the season coming on Saturday night.

The Golden Gophers recorded 7 sacks on the evening to go along with 9 tackles for loss and just 40 rushing yards allowed. The Huskies were once again unable to find any sort of success on the ground, forcing quarterback Demond Williams Jr. and the offense into obvious passing situations. Even then, the second-year starter seemed uncomfortable in the pocket for a majority of the game, in part due to the pressure he faced from a resilient Minnesota front seven.

While the Huskies' next opponent, USC, offers a "bend but don't break" defense, the offensive line hasn't shown much to be optimistic about thus far.

2. Gophers Running Game Outmuscles Huskies

After giving up two touchdowns in the opening period, Ryan Walters' defense was able to hold the Golden Gophers to just 13 points for the rest of the game. The X-factor, however, was Minnesota's ability to control the clock and gain timely yardage proved pivotal throughout the second half. Junior TJ Thomas led the Gophers' rushing attack with 78 yards and averaged 7.1 yards per carry, while the team ran for 125 yards.

While the numbers don't seem staggering, Thomas broke tackles all night and put the Husky defense on its heels, as UW logged at least 11 missed tackles. Coach P.J. Fleck was able to establish his brand of football early and often after jumping out to an early 14-0 lead, winning the time-of-possession battle by over 12 minutes. In order to turn things around entering back-to-back games against ranked opponents, the Washington front seven will have to put a major emphasis on bringing ball carriers down at the first point of contact.

3. Injuries Show Glaring Hole at Key Positions

Injuries have plagued the Huskies throughout the early part of the season, primarily at the running back position. While the loss of Quaid Carr and Jayden Limar has certainly changed the dynamic of the offense, it was the Washington defense that showed vulnerability due to some key injuries. Starting corner Emmanuel Karnley and safety Rahshawn Clark were listed as "emergency options" entering the contest, and the Gophers' quarterback Drake Lindsey took advantage of it.

Third-year cornerback Elias Johnson was the main victim, giving up two passing touchdowns in the first quarter. While Karnley didn't see any action in the contest, Clark was the primary punt and kickoff returner, but did not play on defense. With quarterback Drake Lindsey throwing for over 200 yards and three scores, Walters' secondary surely could've used two of their key starters. While Karnley and Clark are both expected to return full-time soon, the Huskies need as many reinforcements as possible as they stare down a gauntlet of conference games.

Fisch and company will look to bounce back from the underwhelming performance, but it won't be easy, as Washington heads south to take on No. 18 USC next Saturday.
