The Miami Heat are just a week-and-a-half away from kicking off their regular season following a franchise-changing offseason. After adding guys such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson, the Heat are expected to be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Usually contending teams like to be active at the trade deadline in February and if the Heat are in a spot to add some talent, there are some names floating around in current trade discussions who could be available either through trade or contract buy-out around that point of the season. Here are three names to keep an eye on as players who the Heat could target by the deadline:
1. DaRon Holmes II, Denver Nuggets
Holmes, a first-round pick out of Dayton in 2024, missed his entire rookie season due to a torn right Achilles tendon. He made his debut this past season, starting six games and shooting 44 percent from three-point range. At 6'9", Holmes would be a solid option behind Antetokounmpo at power forward but could also run small-ball center behind Bam Adebayo. The Heat added Bobby Portis as well through the blockbuster trade this offseason and will be a solid option in the frontcourt. Holmes is only 24 years old and is a candidate to be dealt by Denver this season as they work through their financial limitations.
2. Reed Sheppard, Houston Rockets
Acquiring a player like Sheppard would seemingly be contingent on Miami throwing in a future first-rounder opposite a player like Nikola Jovic to match salaries. The Rockets have a very crowded backcourt and it seems their priority in terms of player development is focused on other players such as Amen Thompson. Fred VanVleet will be returning to the court this season as well to further clog the minutes and it could be enticing for them to add a future pick while still adding a young player with potential such as Jovic. Even though the Heat will have a projected high standing in the Eastern Conference, an unprotected pick is still valuable. Sheppard played well last season as his role slowly increased but he is still low on the totem pole in that rotation in terms of who Houston values at the moment.
3. Moses Moody, Golden State Warriors
Moody, 24, has been a valuable piece of the Warriors rotation for the past couple of seasons but had easily his best season last year, averaging 12.1 points and shooting an impressive 40.1 percent from three-point range. The Warriors are an older team so they may feel an attachment to hold on to Moody at his age but if they can get another young player such as Jovic in return along with potentially a future pick, then it would be hard to turn that down.
