Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder cruise their way to the Western Conference semifinals after making solid work of the Phoenix Suns in a four-game sweep during the first round of the 2026 NBA playoffs on Monday night.
The Thunder have been remarkable since making their grand return to the playoffs since 2024. They have secured the top spot in the West bracket for three consecutive years, demonstrating their undeniable talent as one of the most elite teams in the entire league.
Oklahoma City swept the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2024 playoffs and did the same to the Memphis Grizzlies during their title run in 2025. Now, they pulled off the four-game sweep once again after eliminating the Suns from the 2026 postseason.
How Thunder played against Suns
The Thunder will hope to continue defending their title as they punch their ticket to the next round of the playoffs. Taking down the Suns in Game 4 was a major step in the right direction for the reigning champions.
Free throws and rebounding made the difference in this matchup. The Thunder prevailed in both categories after making 26 out of 30 free throws and securing 39 rebounds. It wasn’t the same for the Suns as they only made 12 out of 16 shots at the charity stripe and grabbed 33 rebounds.
Six players scored in double-digits for Oklahoma City in the win, including Gilgeous-Alexander. He led the attack with 31 points, eight assists, two rebounds, and one block. He shot 10-of-17 from the field, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. Chet Holmgren came next with 24 points and 12 rebounds, Ajay Mitchell had 22 points and six assists, Isaiah Hartenstein put up 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Alex Caruso provided 14 points and four rebounds. Meanwhile, Cason Wallace contributed 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
The Thunder will look forward to their next journey in the West semifinals. They take on the winner between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Houston Rockets as Game 1 will begin in early May.
