Compher won't play on the weekend:Red Wings coach Todd McLellan isn't expecting to see injured center JT Compher (undisclosed) back in the lineup this weekend. "JT is still day to day," McLellan told reporters. "I don't think he's going to play on the weekend. He skated before we did this morning, and I haven't got any feedback yet, but I don't think he's going to play on the weekend."

Tarasov to make Red Wings debut on Saturday: John Gibson will make his fourth successive start in the Detroit goal on Friday as the Red Wings play host to the Seattle Kraken. That means Daniil Tarasov will be making his Detroit debut on Saturday in the Wings' road opener at Montreal. "Gibby's going to start tomorrow," McLellan said. "Tarasov will get his first opportunity this weekend." It makes sense to do it this way. Play Gibson in the game that you're more likely to get the two points. Such is the lot in life of the backup goalie. You get the second game of back-to-backs on the road in hostile environments. And you suck it up and do your best.

Finnie is a lover, not a fighter:Even though he played junior in the rough-and-tumble WHL with the Kamloops Blazers, Red Wings forward Emmitt Finnie never found occasion to drop the mitts. Until Tuesday. He tangled with Ottawa's Jordan Spence during a line brawl at the end of the second period of Detroit's 5-3 win. "That was my first fight last game," Finnie said. "I didn't think it was gonna escalate like it did. It was pretty fun. The adrenaline was definitely going pretty high after that. I've always talked about wanting to get into a fight. My brother (Marshall), he's more of a fighter, so I've seen him fight growing up and stuff. I told him I was looking for one, so it was nice to get one out of the way." Finnie's brother, who plays NCAA hockey at Niagara University, was impressed with his brother's fighting performance. He liked it," Finnie said. "He's playing in college hockey right now, so he can't fight. So he said now he's a little jealous that I get to fight and he can't."
