The Detroit Tigers have not closed the door on Parker Meadows returning to the field in 2026. But with September approaching, the window for the center fielder to complete his recovery and get back into game shape is becoming increasingly narrow.
Meadows has been sidelined since a frightening early-April collision with teammate Riley Greene in the outfield against the Minnesota Twins . He suffered a concussion, a fractured radius in his left forearm and a facial laceration that required stitches.
Meadows underwent surgery to repair the fracture on April 13 and was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
More than four months later, Meadows is still working his way through the recovery process. The Tigers ' official injury report listed a late-season return as possible as of August 21, but noted that Meadows is still working on his range of motion and remains unable to swing at full speed.
"Heâs really been going through it," Tigers manager AJ Hinch said, according to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News .
The Tigers' position on Meadows is notable because the calendar is becoming as much of an obstacle as the injury itself.
When Meadows underwent surgery after the incident, Hinch acknowledged that the recovery would take "multiple months," although he remained hopeful Meadows could play again during the season.
"Obviously we know his impact on defense," Hinch said in April. "He had gotten off to a pretty decent start. He really is a stable part of our everyday [lineup], especially against right-handed pitching. So for him to suffer another set of injuries on a play thatâs so unfortunate for him, I feel for him. It looked massive when we got out there.
"You always hope for the best, and unfortunately itâs not one thing or two things, it was three things that he has to deal with. One will heal quickly with the stitches. But this gameâs not always fair."
What makes Meadows' latest setback especially difficult is what preceded it. The 26-year-old was limited to only 58 games in 2025, hitting .215 with a .291 on-base percentage and .330 slugging percentage across 213 plate appearances.
His 2025 season was delayed by a nerve issue in his upper right arm that wiped out virtually his entire spring training and kept him from making his season debut until June. He later landed back on the injured list with a right quad strain in late July.
That made a healthy 2026 spring particularly important. Meadows spoke openly in March about how good he felt physically and worked on mechanical adjustments designed to improve his timing and quality of contact.
He flashed his trademark athleticism as well, reaching a sprint speed of 29.3 feet per second while beating out an infield hit during Grapefruit League play.
Before the collision, Meadows appeared in 12 games for Detroit this season and went 9-for-36, good for a .250 average, with two RBIs and three stolen bases.
The Tigers remain optimistic that outfielder Kerry Carpenter can return and contribute in September , but his recovery from plantar fasciitis in his left foot has encountered another obstacle.
Carpenter's rehab program has been paused following a recommendation from a foot specialist. That interruption is particularly notable because Carpenter had been progressing through baseball activities and appeared to be moving closer to a return.
Detroit placed him on the injured list on July 27, and his recovery has included treatment aimed at reducing the discomfort in his heel and gradually rebuilding his ability to run, hit and play the outfield.
Carpenter initially developed the heel problem after changing cleats. The different footwear contributed to a bruise around his heel, and the discomfort eventually developed into plantar fasciitis.
The Tigers attempted to address the problem with treatment that included a cortisone injection and orthotics before Carpenter began working his way through a return-to-play progression .
