The Detroit Tigers could not muster the timely hit they needed all afternoon.
Even the lone run Detroit scratched across the plate did not come on a clutch hit. Instead, the Tigers relied on a wild pitch to bring home their only run in a 3-1 loss to the Washington Nationals .

There was good pitching, but the offense was lackluster — something Tigers fans have become all too familiar with throughout the 2026 season.
Detroit falls to 74-84 on the season, while Washington improves to 74-84.
Young Bats Show the Future
Although the season is essentially gone, there is still plenty of reason for optimism about what comes next.
With Comerica Park preparing to become Fifth Third Park next season, a name Detroit fans have become accustomed to seeing and saying will soon be part of the city's history. But while one chapter is closing, another is beginning.
The future in Detroit could be bright, especially with a young group of hitters beginning to make its presence felt at the major league level. The biggest question is whether those young bats can consistently put the ball in play and capitalize when opportunities arise.

Of Detroit's seven hits on Tuesday, six came from players who did not play in the major leagues last season.
Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark combined for four of those seven hits, with each recording a pair. The two young hitters showcased the potential of Detroit's lineup moving forward, provided the rest of the offense can consistently keep the line moving and avoid leaving opportunities stranded.
McGonigle, who is surely wrapping up a Rookie of the Year-caliber season, reached base twice and now sits just one on-base appearance shy of matching Harvey Kuenn's rookie franchise record set in 1953. McGonigle has reached base safely 259 times this season.
Hao-Yu Lee continued to show why he deserves an everyday role next season, adding another hit, while Ben Malgeri also collected a hit and later scored from third on a wild pitch to tie the game in the sixth inning.

Abrams Does the Damage
Drew Anderson was excellent for Detroit, continuing the strong stretch he has put together as of late. However, one critical mistake in the seventh inning ultimately cost him and the Tigers.
In the second inning, Anderson left a pitch over the plate to C.J. Abrams, who turned on it for his 32nd home run of the season. It was a solo shot, and while it put Washington ahead, it did not do significant damage.
That was not the mistake.
Anderson settled in after the home run and pitched into the seventh inning, allowing just three hits and one run before the final frame. But a Dylan Crews single and stolen base once again put the Nationals in position to strike.

Abrams came through again.
He teed off on Anderson for his second home run of the game, this one his 33rd of the season, giving Washington a 3-1 lead and ending Anderson's day.
Anderson finished with six innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while walking three and striking out four.
One Chapter Nears Its End
The Tigers now have just four games remaining, with an off day on Thursday.
Justin Verlander is scheduled to make his historic final career start Saturday at Comerica Park, which will be hosting its second-to-last game before the Tigers close the book on the stadium.
Then, Detroit will turn the page.
Comerica Park will make its final stand, and the Tigers — along with the city of Detroit — will begin a new chapter.
