- Tigers Have No-Brainer Extension Candidate
Riley Greene once again proved himself as the anchor in the Detroit Tigers ' lineup in 2026.
Over 140 games, the 26-year-old slashed .280/.370/.474 with 21 home runs and 75 RBI. Yet perhaps Greene's most encouraging stat was related to his plate discipline. After recording the second-most strikeouts in MLB with 201 in 2025, that number dropped significantly to 157 this season. Additionally, Greene's 71 walks were a career-high.

The outfielder's strikeout rate decreased from 30.7 percent last season to 26.5 percent this season, while his walk rate increased from seven percent to 12 percent.
Greene's continued offensive production, combined with his improved plate discipline, earned him All-Star honors for a third consecutive season.
Greene has been a model of consistency in a Tigers uniform. In a sport where consistency is hard to maintain, Detroit should not hesitate to extend its cornerstone outfielder.

Why the Tigers Should Extend Riley Greene
Despite the departure of ace Tarik Skubal at this summer's trade deadline, the Tigers have been more aggressive spenders than in recent years.
Signing starter Framber Valdez to a three-year, $115 million contract last offseason and likely American League Rookie of the Year shortstop Kevin McGonigle to an eight-year, $150 million contract extension in April is indicative of that.
If another Detroit player deserves that type of money, it's Greene. His numbers and consistency speak for themselves, but his importance to the Tigers was obvious in 2026.

He missed 22 regular-season games, mostly due to a right hamstring strain he sustained on Aug. 11 against the Cleveland Guardians . In those games, Detroit went 6-16 . As of that date, the Tigers trailed the Chicago White Sox by 2.5 games in the American League Central and were a half-game out of a postseason spot.
Detroit has several young offensive players to be excited about, including McGonigle and center fielder Max Clark. However, that exciting youth needs to be complemented by veterans who can anchor the lineup.

Greene has done just that during his tenure with the Tigers, as evidenced by an OPS above .800 in each of the last three seasons.
Furthermore, the American League Central remains wide open. Detroit stayed in the postseason mix for a little while even after its deadline selloff, and the Guardians won only 85 regular-season games.
Both factors give the Tigers a better shot at being a division contender than many think. That could lead Detroit to actively pursue free agents to improve its chances. But a bigger priority should be locking down its offensive X-factor, Greene, sooner rather than later.
