The Detroit Tigers will be facing off against the Boston Red Sox , but they’ll have to do without their key pitcher. Tarik Skubal had a minor injury scare in his last start, and it looks like the Tigers are just trying to be safe with him as he’ll be a scratch for the game, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
“ Tarik Skubal is being scratched tonight. But hope and belief is he will be OK. Seen as a precautionary move,” Heyman wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Later on, it was reported by Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic that Skubal had loose bodies in his elbow.
“ Tarik Skubal is going on the injured list. He has loose bodies in his elbow and will need surgery. Unclear on the timeline for now,” Stavenhagen wrote on X.
Skubal is having another strong season, and through seven starts, he has a 2.70 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. It looks like Skubal could miss some time, but hopefully, he’s able to return to the field sooner rather than later.
For the past two seasons, Skubal has won the American League Cy Young award, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he won the award again this season if he can stay fairly healthy.
It doesn’t make things better that the Tigers were already dealing with injuries, as Well Vest was placed on the 15-day injured lis t with lateral forearm inflammation, and Kenley Jansen is day-to-day with a right groin/lower abdomen issue.
The Tigers are currently 18-17 and are in second place in the AL Central, and losing Skubal for a period of time would not be the best for them.
As of now, the Tigers will have to pivot and find some players who fill in for Skubal, as well as the other players on IL.
