After a tough second-round playoff elimination against the San Antonio Spurs in six games, the Minnesota Timberwolves face complex roster decisions. Rumors suggest that retaining standout guard Ayo Dosunmu in free agency may require a difficult trade sacrifice, potentially forcing the front office to move fan-favorite Donte DiVincenzo , who is expected to miss most of next season due to a torn right Achilles tendon. This is necessary to avoid the costly second luxury tax apron.

However, the front office is not wasting any time ensuring their backcourt remains intact.
According to a report by Jake Fischer, the upcoming summer marketplace will feature marquee guards like Trae Young , Ja Morant , and Austin Reaves , with Reaves expected to enter unrestricted free agency after formally declining his $14.9 million player option.
Despite intense external competition and widespread projections that Reaves will ultimately stay with the Los Angeles Lakers , the Timberwolves are already hard at work behind the scenes. Fischer reports that league sources confirm Minnesota is diligently negotiating a new deal to keep Dosunmu, their influential midseason acquisition, long-term in the Twin Cities.
Locking him down now helps Minnesota avoid the asset-heavy bidding wars that deterred other suitors during the regular season. For example, the Detroit Pistons were heavily engaged in trade talks with the Chicago Bulls for Dosunmu before the deadline, but ultimately chose to acquire Kevin Huerter instead.

As reported by Hunter Patterson of The Athletic, Detroit refused to meet Chicago's steep asking price of young players and draft capital, especially given the uncertainty around Dosunmu's willingness to re-sign . After landing in Minnesota and having a stellar postseason run, Dosunmu has attracted attention from rival front offices, making the Timberwolves' proactive contract negotiations a crucial move to secure their core before the free-agent period officially begins.
