San Francisco Giants new manager Tony Vitello wants to lead his team to success . While Vitello is still new to the job with the Giants , the manager is not shy about sharing his brutally honest takes and opinions. He recently revealed his "command respect" mindset during an interview, via KNBR.
"For me it's just you have to command respect from your opponent," Vitello said. "It doesn't mean hitting guys or anything like that. But if you're not respected, there's gotta be some sort of repercussions to that, otherwise it's not gonna change."
The Giants are trying to earn respect in the National League right now. They have unquestionably had it in the past. After all, this is the same franchise that earned three World Series championships from 2010-2014.
They now have a new manager, however. And that manager had never coached in MLB before this season. Vitello, of course, was hired after coaching the Tennessee baseball team.
After losing 3-2 to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday in the first game of a double-header, the Giants are now just 13-17 in 2026. The ball club is in last place in the National League West standings.
The franchise itself has respect given its history, but this specific Giants squad is still looking to earn respect. Tony Vitello clearly values that element of the game.
Game 2 of the Giants and Phillies double-header in Philadelphia is scheduled for 5:35 PM EST on Thursday. Vitello will do everything he can to lead the Giants to a crucial bounce back victory.
