NORMAN, Okla. - This was one of those nights where the result and the feeling do not match.
Oklahoma beat New Mexico 14-6 , moved to 2-1, and still walked out of Norman with the energy of a team that had just lost. That happens when you are a three-touchdown favorite at home against a Group of Six roster and need every bit of a dominant defensive night just to get out with 14 points.

A win is a win.
This one still felt like a warning.
1. Ben Arbuckle is not the answer right now
Something is badly off with this offense, and it is getting harder to defend the current version of Ben Arbuckle 's operation. The line is not moving people. The run game is dead in the water at 110.3 yards per game. The whole attack plays with no rhythm, no tempo, and no confidence.
Oklahoma is huddling up snap after snap, which looks nothing like the faster, freer identity Arbuckle teams used to have at Washington State . Maybe that is on him. Maybe Brent Venables is squeezing the offense into something smaller and safer than it is supposed to be.

Maybe it is both. The why matters less than the product, and the product is bad.
John Mateer looks lost in it, the skill players are not consistently featured, and the home crowd got restless enough to chant "Fire Arbuckle" before the night was over. That does not mean a midweek firing is automatically the right move. It does mean Oklahoma has already reached the point where alternatives have to be discussed.
Kevin Wilson is in the building. If this offense stays stuck, the staff is not going to be able to keep selling patience through Georgia and Texas .
2. John Mateer has run out of excuses

Last year there was a ready-made explanation. Mateer got hurt, played through it, and still helped get Oklahoma to the playoff. That earned him some grace. This year is different.
The program spent the offseason and the first part of the fall telling everybody he was healthy, stronger, and past the injury version of himself. Through three games, he has not looked like an improved quarterback. He has not even looked as useful as the diminished version from the second half of last season.
Against New Mexico he threw for 238 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, which is the perfect summary of the current Mateer experience: just enough production to keep the staff attached, far too many mistakes to trust him as the solution.
The Sooners do not have time to wait around and hope the old version randomly reappears. Georgia is next. Texas is coming. If Mateer cannot settle into clean decisions, accurate throws, and some form of rhythm, Oklahoma has to find out whether Whitt Newbauer or Bowe Bentley can at least give the offense a different pulse.

This is no longer about potential. It is about whether Mateer is actively holding the whole operation back.
3. Sategna is great, but he cannot carry a broken receiver room alone
Isaiah Sategna did his job. One hundred and one yards and a touchdown is a real night, especially after the quiet Michigan tape. That part is not the issue.
The issue is what the rest of the room looked like once Trell Harris went down.
Outside of Sategna, Oklahoma's true wide receivers barely mattered. Parker Livingstone and Elijah Thomas combined for four catches and 29 yards. That is not enough juice, not enough separation, and not enough help for a quarterback already struggling to play on schedule. Some of that is on Mateer for missing windows and losing confidence in the operation. Some of it is also on the receivers for failing to consistently create the kind of space that forces a defense to panic.

Harris' injury exposed the depth problem in a hurry. Oklahoma cannot keep running an offense where one wideout is trustworthy, the tight ends are the real safety net, and everybody else feels interchangeable and invisible.
That will not survive SEC play.
4. The tight ends are the strength of the offense
If there is one place Oklahoma actually looks improved on offense, it is with Jason Witten 's tight ends. That room has gone from an afterthought in recent years to the most reliable part of the attack.
Rocky Beers continues to do the same thing every week, and against New Mexico he added two catches for 34 yards. Hayden Hansen took a bigger step with three catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. Mateer clearly trusts those guys, and he should. They are physical, useful in the middle of the field, and far more consistent than the rest of the skill-talent structure around them.

Witten deserves real credit for that. The contrast with the old standard under Joe Jon Finley is obvious. This group looks like a strength instead of a workaround.
The next step is simple: use it more.
If the wideouts are struggling to separate and the run game is stuck, the tight ends are not a complementary piece. They are the best path Oklahoma has to stay functional.
5. The defense needs to start creating turnovers
It feels almost unnatural to criticize a defense that has allowed 23 points through three games, and yet this still has to be said.
Great defenses do more than keep the score down. They create extra possessions. Oklahoma is not doing that right now. Against New Mexico the Sooners had six sacks and 10 tackles for loss, which is dominant on the surface, and still finished with zero turnovers.

That is two straight weeks without a takeaway.
For a defense with real talent in the secondary, that is not good enough. Eli Bowen , Peyton Bowen , Courtland Guillory , and the rest of that group should be finishing some of these pressures with interceptions and short fields.
Oklahoma's offense is too shaky to keep asking the defense to win by attrition alone. The front is doing its job. The tackling and toughness are there. What is missing is the finishing piece that flips field position and hides some of the offensive dysfunction. If that does not show up soon, the defense is going to keep playing winning football and still get dragged into stressful nights it should already have put away.
The larger takeaway is simple. Oklahoma is winning the games it can survive with elite defense and just enough explosive moments. That formula will not travel well in Athens.

The Sooners need an identity on offense, and they need it fast. Right now the only honest description is that the defense is carrying a team whose quarterback is struggling, whose coordinator is under fire, whose wide receiver depth looks thin, and whose only real offensive comfort zone is the tight end room.
A 14-6 home win over New Mexico stopped the bleeding in the win column. It did nothing to quiet the bigger concern.
