Toronto Blue Jays Dealing with Additional Serious Injury Concern
This week, the general news on the injury front had been pretty positive for the Toronto Blue Jays .
Trey Yesavage returned from injury, as did George Springer . Jose Berrios likely only needs one more rehab start and Addison Barger is starting his rehab assignment on Sunday at Single-A Dunedin.
All that's good news as the Jays continue to tread water for the first month and change of the season.
However, the news turned sour again on Saturday afternoon, as Springer left a daytime contest with the Minnesota Twins . He was hit directly on the left big toe that he fractured earlier in April, and had returned from.
We'll wait for an update after the game, but that's certainly troublesome for the Jays - and Springer.
A 13-year veteran of the Houston Astros and Blue Jays, Springer is a four-time All-Star who is known for his clutch playoff performances. He won the 2017 World Series with the Astros, earning the World Series MVP, and he sent the Blue Jays to the World Series in 2025 with a late game-winning home run against the Seattle Mariners .
A career .266 hitter, he has 295 home runs and 803 RBIs. He hit a career-high 39 homers for Houston in 2019.
He signed a six-year deal with the Blue Jays before the 2021 season and that deal expires after this season. It's unclear what his future looks like at the age of 36. He'll be 37 before the start of the 2027 season, which is also up in the air because of likely labor issues. But regardless of his future, he's a leader in that clubhouse and someone that the Blue Jays are heavily reliant on this season.
If he has to go back on the injured list, that will be another tough pill for John Schneider's team to navigate.
In addition to Barger's absence in the outfield, the team is also without Anthony Santander , who could miss the entire season with a labrum injury. The Blue Jays designated Eloy Jimenez for assignment when they activated Springer the first time, meaning that they don't have him as immediate depth right now to call on. There is a chance they can rescind the DFA, but he's not much of a defender, meaning the team's outfield depth is being severely tested again.
The Blue Jays and Twins will finish up the series on Sunday afternoon at 12:45 p.m. ET. Yesavage will make his second start of the season. He earned the win against Boston by allowing no earned runs and striking out three.
Joe Ryan will be the opposition for Minnesota. He's 2-3 but owns a 3.76 ERA. One of the better pitchers in the American League, he has 39 strikeouts already on the campaign.
