Trade rumors continue to swirl around the Denver Broncos , and more names are surfacing. Coach Sean Payton dismissed the ones involving Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor as "internet gossip," but that's not going to stop the speculation from expanding and ramping up.
Some of the latest buzz on this comes from Jeff Legwold, Dan Graziano and Seth Walder of ESPN, who summed up the deadline approach with a series of questions and possible answers.
Walder's contribution included a new name to target: guard Landon Dickerson of the Philadelphia Eagles. Per Walder, Dickerson is on the outs in Phlly due to the combination of a knee injury and poor performance, and the fact that he doesn't have any guaranteed money next year makes him a good target for a team like Denver to roll the dice on him.
It's the reason behind Walker's suggestion that's truly surprising, however. The Broncos offensive line came into this season as one of the best in the NFL when it comes to pass protection, but they've now fallen to 20th in pass blocking rate, per the writer.
The rumor/suggestion about moving receiver/return man Marvin Mims Jr. is old news, but Graziano offered it up anyway. Mims is in the final year of his contract, and he's a game breaker who can help in both the return game and as a receiver.
What makes this one especially dubious is that Mims just had a big play in Denver's narrow win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, and Payton has talked about getting him involved in the offense more. New receiver Jaylen Waddle hasn't been all that productive after the big trade to get him, so it would be a big surprise to see Mims get moved, contract issues aside.
Legwold, meanwhile, offered a useful summary the Broncos' overall situation going into the deadline. Denver has a long list of free agents coming into the deadline, including the league's deepest secondary per the writer, and he thinks any moves in the next week would have to meet both long- and short-term needs.
That fits the way Payton and GM George Paton tend to think, so he's spot on there. An offensive line move feels likely, but the running back rumors have to be characterized as mostly speculation at this point.
The Broncos are also operating from a position of advantage right now. They're 6-2 with a softer schedule coming up, which gives them the ability to be more selective when it comes to what they address and how they do it.
