The Portland Trail Blazers received a B grade from ESPN's Zach Kram for their decision to sign center Robert Williams to a new three-year deal, a move that gives the team some valuable stability in the frontcourt while also creating an interesting question surrounding 2025 first-round pick Yang Hansen.
Williams has dealt with injuries throughout his career, but when healthy, he gives Portland a veteran presence and an athletic defensive option in the middle. The Trail Blazers already have another young center in Donovan Clingan, who was selected in the first round in 2024, making the decision to keep Williams around particularly notable with Hansen now in the mix as well.

Kram's analysis of the signing pointed directly toward Hansen as one of the potential ripple effects of the decision, "One ripple effect of this signing is that it raises questions about the Trail Blazers' view on 2025 first-rounder Yang Hansen, as it seems unlikely that any of the three centers can play together," Kram wrote.
That creates a potentially difficult situation for Hansen as he enters his second NBA season. Portland invested a first-round pick in the young center, who has intriguing offensive skills and passing ability, but the team's current frontcourt construction could make it difficult to find consistent minutes for all three players.
Kram also pointed out that Clingan and Hansen never shared the court last season, while Williams played alongside the other two centers for 48 total minutes. Those minutes did not produce encouraging results, adding another layer to the question of how Portland plans to structure its center rotation moving forward.
There is still a path toward making the trio work, particularly if Clingan develops into a more reliable three-point shooter. Kram noted that could allow Clingan and Williams to play together in a similar way to Williams' time alongside Al Horford in Boston.

For Hansen, though, the situation is worth monitoring. Portland's decision to retain Williams suggests the veteran still has a role in the team's plans, while Clingan remains an important part of the franchise's young core. That leaves Hansen needing to carve out his own place in a crowded frontcourt.
The B grade reflects the value Williams can provide when healthy, but the signing also adds another question to a developing Portland roster. How the Trail Blazers distribute minutes among Williams, Clingan and Hansen could ultimately reveal plenty about how the organization views its newest first-round pick.
