The Portland Trail Blazers unquestionably improved their roster by trading Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to the Memphis Grizzlies for Ja Morant . However, winning a trade does not mean Portland will miss nothing about the players it surrendered.
Grant gave the Trail Blazers a veteran, savvy two-way forward who could provide consistent scoring. During his four seasons in Portland, Grant averaged approximately 19 points and shot 39 percent from three-point range.

Replacing his production will require more than simply inserting another player into his former position. Portland must replace his scoring, defensive flexibility and ability to make intelligent decisions against experienced opponents.
Fortunately, the Trail Blazers already have two young forwards entering their primes. Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara should absorb most of the available minutes and responsibilities created by Grant's departure.
Avdija is coming off his first All-Star season and has already proven he can carry a major offensive workload. Camara continues developing into one of Portland's most valuable defenders, making him another natural candidate for increased responsibility.
Still, neither player should be expected to replace Grant alone. That is where Jeremy Sochan becomes one of the most important pieces of Portland's new rotation.

Sochan does not need to become an elite three-point shooter for this experiment to work. Portland has Morant, Damian Lillard and other capable scorers to create offense. What the Trail Blazers need from Sochan is elite defense in specific moments when Micah Nori calls upon him.
His assignment could change every night. Sochan might defend a powerful forward in one matchup, switch onto a guard in another or provide emotional energy during a difficult stretch. That unpredictability could help Portland replace Grant's versatility without forcing Sochan into an unrealistic offensive role.
Meanwhile, the risk attached to acquiring Morant remains completely justified. He is younger than Grant, and Portland's potential reward is considerably greater if he stays healthy and recaptures even 50 to 75 percent of his best form.
If Morant returns to an MVP-caliber level, which should remain the expectation surrounding his talent, the trade could transform Portland's future. The Trail Blazers exchanged a dependable veteran for a player capable of changing their ceiling.

Portland will miss Grant's steady scoring and two-way experience. It should not regret trading him.
Avdija and Camara are ready for larger responsibilities, while Sochan must become the defensive weapon who completes the transition. If those three deliver, Portland can appreciate what Grant provided without wishing it had kept him.
