After some difficult games for the Cleveland Guardians against the Washington Nationals , the team would bounce back and get a key 3-2 win on Wednesday afternoon. As Guardians star pitcher Gavin Williams led the team to a win on Wednesday against the Nationals, catcher Travis Bazzana would also be instrumental in the win and experienced a role change in the game.
Bazzana would move to the lead-off hitter spot and had a productive game in going two-for-four with two doubles and a run, marking an extra-base hit for the 23-year-old in five straight games. Having been a lead-off hitter in the past, Bazzana expressed how he felt "comfortable."
"Yeah, I've kind of done it my whole life, and I feel like comfortable there from the get-go. But so, just trying to keep the at-bats the same, keep the process good," Bazzana said, according to GuardsTV on X, formerly Twitter.
Entering Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Bazzana had hit a .293 batting average to go along with three home runs and 11 RBIs.
Guardians' Travis Bazzana on the impact of Gavin Williams
Bazzana would also be the primary catcher for Gavin Williams, as he recorded another productive start. Entering the contest, he had a 3.25 ERA to go along with 84 strikeouts and a 7-3 record. Throwing seven innings, Williams would strike out four batters, allowing one run, three hits, and two walks, as Bazzana spoke on the 26-year-old pitcher's impact in Cleveland.
"Yeah, he's been unreal for us all year. Yeah, he just does it week in, week out, and for us to be able to get him a win there is huge," Bazzana said after Wednesday afternoon's win.
"Just executing pitches in different counts, like, he can throw three different breaking balls and two different fast balls in any count, and he's able to just separate those and keep hitters off-balance," Bazzana continued.
At any rate, the Guardians are now 33-25, which puts the team in first place in the AL Central, as the team gets a break on Thursday before the start of the next three-game series on Friday night against the Boston Red Sox .
