The Travis Kelce injury has me paying more attention to the Chiefs' receiving options than I'd like. Apparently, wondering how much his ankle can handle is now part of preparing for Sunday.
Kelce remained limited Thursday with an ankle issue. That does not mean he will miss the Seahawks game on Oct. 25, and it does not tell us how many snaps he could handle. It does mean Kansas City needs a plan that accounts for more than seeing his name on the active list. Noah Gray can absorb some tight-end receiving duties, Kenneth Walker offers underneath outlets, and Xavier Worthy supplies a downfield threat.
The Chiefs' Thursday injury report listed Kelce as limited for a second consecutive practice and wide receiver Rashee Rice as a nonparticipant. With Tyquan Thornton still sidelined following a dislocated ankle, Kansas City's receiving options are thinning.
At tight end, the unofficial depth chart lists Noah Gray and Jared Wiley behind Kelce. Xavier Worthy, Cyrus Allen, and Jalen Royals offer options at wide receiver, while running back Kenneth Walker III gives Patrick Mahomes another outlet in the passing game.
A limited designation does not remove Kelce from the game plan, but practice participation doesn't determine how Kelce will look when he plants, changes direction, or absorbs contact. Making up a backup plan in the middle of a stalled possession is the kind of stress that takes years off a Chiefs fan's life.

Across five games, Kelce has 20 receptions for 299 yards and two touchdowns . That is approximately 15 yards per catch, so his contribution thus far has extended beyond being a comfortable short outlet.
Gray is the logical starting point for tight-end receiving duties. Walker gives Mahomes an underneath answer when longer routes are covered, while Worthy offers opportunities for bigger gains. Royals' fourth-down touchdown provides another example of a receiver delivering near the goal line, although one scoring catch does not establish him as Kelce's red-zone replacement.
Noah Gray has nine catches for 114 yards, including a long of 31 . Gray provided a useful example against Miami in Week Three, securing a 24-yard contested catch that moved Kansas City inside the red zone . That play showed he can give Mahomes a downfield option even when the defense hasn't conveniently forgotten to cover him. That catch makes Gray one of the Chiefs' receiving options worth a larger role if Kelce's workload drops.
That catch supports giving Gray opportunities beyond short outlets. It does not establish that he can match Kelce's production over a larger workload. I would start with Gray on throws across the middle and let his effectiveness determine how much more comes his way. Asking him to download a decade of chemistry with Mahomes before Sunday feels overly ambitious.

Walker could help on checkdowns into the flat, screens with blockers ahead of him, and short throws into space vacated by linebackers. Against Indianapolis, Walker caught a short pass on third down in overtime and worked through traffic for a 22-yard gain that helped set up the winning field goal . Walker expands the Chiefs' receiving options underneath when Seattle takes away the deeper throws. I'm perfectly happy to let Walker handle the remaining yards instead of requiring the quarterback to perform another escape act.
Seattle's linebacker availability adds another wrinkle. The Thursday injury report listed Drake Thomas, Chazz Surratt, and Connor O'Toole as nonparticipants, while Tyrice Knight returned to full participation. If those absences carry into Sunday, I would test Seattle's replacements with short throws to Walker and routes across the middle for Gray. That is a matchup worth probing, though practice absences alone do not establish a weakness in coverage.

Xavier Worthy's 41-yard catch on third down against Las Vegas showed how quickly Mahomes can turn a difficult situation into a scoring opportunity. Against Los Angeles, Worthy's 19-yard catch-and-run helped set up a 50-yard field goal before halftime , part of a seven-catch, 73-yard afternoon.
Jalen Royals has already delivered when there was no next down to rescue the possession. Against Indianapolis, he caught a one-yard touchdown on fourth down to put Kansas City ahead in the third quarter .
Worthy's value is that Kansas City does not have to choose between using his speed downfield and getting him shorter throws. If defenders give him room, crossing routes offer a chance to gain yards after the catch. If they crowd those routes, Mahomes can look behind them. Those are possible answers, though the earlier highlights alone do not tell us how Seattle will defend him.

Kelce's injury deserves attention without turning every practice designation into a prediction of disaster.
If Kelce is moving well, use him. If his ankle restricts him, my first adjustment would be to give Gray more receiving opportunities at tight end, with Walker available underneath and Worthy continuing to threaten downfield. Royals has supplied a useful scoring example, but I would need more evidence before expecting him to take on a major role.
I would prefer an offensive plan with more detail than "Patrick and Travis will probably figure something out."
They often do. That doesn't make it a good staffing policy.
