It has been a dominant start for San Diego Padres reliever Mason Miller . And a teammate revealed the secret behind Miller’s success . Also, Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman dropped an epic Wiffle Ball comparison on Miller, according to The Athletic.
Here are the numbers for Miller since Aug. 6 of last season:
“• Opposing hitters went 7-for-127 (.055), with 87 strikeouts
• Let’s repeat that: 87 strikeouts … and … 7 hits
• He faced 141 hitters. Not one of them scored.
• 39 straight games with zero extra-base hits allowed
• 39 straight games without ever allowing more than one hit,” Jayson Stark wrote.
“Ridiculous,” Hoffman said, literally laughing out loud when I read him those numbers. “I’d be hard-pressed to see someone do that with a Wiffle Ball.”
Does this make Padres RP Mason Miller the all-time best?
That’s what Stark wrote: “We are watching the most unhittable pitcher who ever lived. Period.”
One stretch. Incredibly dominant. But Miller has only been around for four seasons. He is currently allowing 3.5 hits per nine innings this season. What better stat is there to gauge whether he is the most unhittable pitcher who ever lived?
However, that mark doesn’t even rank in the top 10 all-time for a single season, according to statmuse.com.
Look at Devin Williams in 2020. His hits allowed per inning stood at 2.67. And before you say, “That was a pandemic-shortened season,” consider that Miller has thrown only 15.1 innings this year. But Stark has crowned him as the best-ever.
Stark spends a lot of time in his article trying to prove Miller has put together the most impressive stretch of unhittability in major league history. Cool.
But does that make Miller more unhittable than Nolan Ryan? In 807 games, Ryan allowed only 6.56 hits per nine innings, according to statmuse.com. Sandy Koufax is second at 6.79.
Those guys didn’t get to pitch one inning at a time, going full juice. How many hits per nine innings would Ryan have allowed in a stream of one-inning stints?
Consider that Ryan threw seven no-hitters in his career. That means even in the ninth inning and well over 100 pitches for the game, Ryan still had unhittable stuff.
Let’s see Miller do that.
