Iman Shumpert has never forgotten what happened after the Cleveland Cavaliers finally beat the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals. After Cleveland erased a 3-1 deficit against a 73-win Warriors team to win their first ring, he expected more to come.
However, Kevin Durant made one of the most controversial decisions in sports history by signing with the Warriors and forming one of the most dominant teams alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
What was expected to be the Cavaliers winning more rings after finally getting over the Warriors' hump turned into two more Finals defeats against them. Shumpert never forgot i t, and more recently, he let KD know that he was the reason why he and Cleveland don't have more rings.
Then came a back-and-forth between them over the whole thing, and now Shumpert has gone so far as to say that Durant moving to the Warriors tarnished his legacy and his reputation as an inspiration to many fans.
Heroes and villains
Speaking on his "Shump Street" podcast, Shumpert compared Durant's reputation to Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, who famously never won a title despite being one of the greatest players of his generation, and declared that he was more inspirational because of loyalty.
"As our inspirations and guys that came before us, like Charles Barkley dying on the hill with the sword in hand like he on some Game of Thrones s—t," he said . "That's cool to me. His story is what it is. His legend is what it is. We still respect him. But when you ask at the table, did he win? They say no."
Barkley finished his 16-year career without ever winning a ring. He is among the players many fans cite as an example against the ring-chasing debate when discussing KD's move to Golden State.
Although Barkley technically tried to chase a ring in his later career with the Houston Rockets , he is still considered a player who finished his career fighting for a ring rather than taking the easy path to it.
Shump believes that KD should not be considered in the same realm as legends like Sir Charles, just because of his so-called decision to join an already-stacked team to win his first championship.
"I'm saying on some Game of Thrones s—t like we could respect the warrior that go down swinging, we be like that's our favorite character. Like, K, you took yourself out that conversation," stated Shump.
"Instead of doing it, you basically turned against your brothers at this castle," he continued. "You turned against them and was a traitor."
While it may seem that Shumpert's point may come across as dramatic, especially given the Game of Thrones analogy, there is still some truth to it. KD, despite being one of the greatest scorers the game has ever seen, has always been subject to scrutiny simply because he signed with Golden State rather than staying in Oklahoma City .
Durant has two rings on his resume, but nobody ever labels him as a serial winner. Ultimately, Shumpert argues that players like Barkley, who ended their careers fighting for a ring, are still respected and considered more of an inspiration than those who left their teams to win rings elsewhere, like KD.
A betrayal
It's important to note, however, that Shumpert feels this way because his Cavaliers didn't continue winning after 2016, further blaming Durant as to why they didn't win more rings after they got over the hump.
"That's my only issue with dude. I'm like, n—a, our castle would have won if you ain't go join the other castle," admitted Shumpert. "We game planning for them, what the hell we supposed to do with you?"
Nobody really knows whether Cleveland would've won if KD hadn't joined Golden State, but Shump most certainly believes so, and it has thus ignited the narrative around the reality of Durant's complicated legacy.
The shadow of signing with the 73-9 Warriors will forever haunt KD, but it also extends to some players in the league, like Shumpert, whose aspirations of getting another title were immediately squashed after one of the game's greatest scorers joined one of the greatest teams in history.
