The Minnesota Twins should decide what it would cost to keep Luke Keaschall beyond his existing years of club control. His completed 2026 campaign gave the organization enough evidence to start that conversation, even with important questions still unresolved.
Keaschall, 24, hit .282/.374/.407 with 10 home runs and 20 stolen bases across 152 games and 620 plate appearances. That combination gave Minnesota a young hitter who reached base consistently while contributing over a full schedule.

An extension would require judgment about how those skills translate into long-term value. The argument for exploring one is strong. The argument for accepting any price is much weaker. Minnesota should approach its representatives with a clear view of the years it wants to acquire and the risks it can afford.
Why an Early Deal Could Make Sense

Keaschall's .374 on-base percentage is the clearest starting point. A lineup benefits from a hitter who gives the players behind him regular opportunities to drive in runs. That skill can help Minnesota construct an offense with more ways to sustain an inning.

His age also makes the timing attractive. An agreement could cover productive years while establishing predictable costs around a player who has already handled regular work in the Majors. That would give the front office a firmer foundation for future roster planning.
RosterResource's contract ledger lists Keaschall as a pre-arbitration player for 2027. Minnesota therefore has years of control available under the existing system. The strongest reason to extend him would be to obtain additional seasons beyond that control while securing a mutually acceptable salary structure.
There is a benefit for the player as well. Guaranteed money can provide security against injury or a decline in performance. In exchange, the club could seek a longer commitment and one or two options that preserve future flexibility.
Exploratory talks would help establish whether those interests overlap. A reasonable price could allow Minnesota to commit to a useful young hitter before another productive year strengthens his negotiating position. The first conversation would also reveal whether the sides value his future similarly.

Why the Price and Position Still Matter

Keaschall's power remains a factor in the evaluation. His 10 home runs support the case for a productive everyday player, but Minnesota should be cautious about paying for a major power increase that has yet to occur.
His defensive assignment matters as much. The value of his offense changes depending on whether he contributes at second base, moves elsewhere, or spends substantial time at designated hitter. A long-term investment should account for the complete role.
Twins On SI's coverage of the organization's defensive problems reinforced why run prevention belongs in that discussion. Minnesota needs to improve how the pieces fit together, and an extension should support that objective.

There is also a legitimate case for waiting. The club would preserve flexibility and gather another year's evidence about his defensive progress and offensive ceiling. The cost of that patience could be a higher eventual price, but the additional information has value.
My recommendation is to explore a deal that acquires meaningful additional control at a cost consistent with his demonstrated skills. If the asking price assumes a substantially better player, Minnesota can keep developing him under his current contract status. Keaschall has earned an extension conversation; the terms should determine whether it becomes an agreement.
