Former Washington Huskies record-setting quarterback Jake Browning and tight end Devin Culp were among the players released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as part of their final cuts on Sunday.
According to a report from Fox Sports, after his release, Browning turned down an opportunity to return to the team on the practice squad and instead look for his fourth NFL destination.
Browning, a free agent signing this past March with the goal of serving as starter Baker Mayfield 's backup, lost the spot to undrafted rookie free agent Jalon Daniels after dealing with an injury that prevented him from starting Tampa Bay 's preseason opener against the New York Jets .
Culp, a former seventh-round pick by the Buccaneers in the 2024 NFL draft, is expected to return to the team on the practice squad if he's able to clear waivers. In two seasons with the NFC South organization, Culp has made 18 appearances—15 of which came in 2025—and has recorded 6 catches for 94 yards and a touchdown.
Should Culp clear waivers and return to Tampa Bay, Browning will search for a backup role on his fourth team after breaking into the league in 2019 with the Minnesota Vikings . Browning didn't get his first chance to step onto the field until late in 2023 with the Cincinnati Bengals after Joe Burrow suffered a season-ending wrist injury.
Browning made seven starts and played in nine total games for the Bengals, though the team ultimately missed the playoffs with a 9-8 overall record as the first-time starter threw for 1,936 yards and 12 touchdowns with 7 interceptions.
In the following two seasons with the AFC North franchise, Browning made eight more appearances and three starts, all of which came in 2025. He opted to vie for the same opportunity with the Buccaneers with Mayfield going into the final year of his contract, potentially setting up another starting job in 2027, but it didn't come to fruition.
With several other teams releasing quarterbacks, including Will Levis from the Tennessee Titans and Josh Johnson from the Bengals, on the final cutdown day ahead of the regular season, there could be an opening for Browning to land as a veteran option and find a path up another team's depth chart in his eighth season in the league.
