The Detroit Lions ' defense is off to a rough start in 2026 , as the secondary has been prone to giving up explosive plays and the pass rush has been lackluster outside of Aidan Hutchinson .
Entering the season, the defense was considered the Lions' biggest X-factor and would dictate how the year would go for head coach Dan Campbell's squad. So far, defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard 's group has raised more questions rather than found answers.
There isn't much to like about Detroit's defense right now, but one positive storyline has been defensive tackle Tyleik Williams , who is quietly off to a fantastic start in Year 2.

Through two games, Williams has made his presence felt on the interior of the Lions' defensive line. The Ohio State product has tallied eight tackles, two defensive stops, four quarterback pressures, and an 81.3 Pro Football Focus grade , along with a 76.0 run-defense grade.
Williams lost 50 pounds this offseason , and it's making a difference. The 2025 first-round pick looks quicker, is playing with more fire, and is establishing himself as the Lions' long-term nose tackle.
Though Williams could make some strides in the pass-rushing department to become an every-down player, the 23-year-old is still developing and already looks much improved in his second season. Detroit's defense hasn't given fans much to cheer about thus far, but Williams' development has been an awesome sight to witness.
The Lions will work to get back in the win column in Week 3 at Ford Field against the New York Jets , and Williams will once again play a pivotal role on the defensive line and look to continue his stellar start to 2026.
