The St. Louis Blues defense just got a lot more interesting, according to Bleedin Blue . Tyler Tucker suffered a knee injury during drills on Sunday, and that single moment could change the entire roster picture before the season even starts. The 26-year-old defenseman is already a depth player on the bubble, and now he might not even make the opening night lineup. This is not a minor scare. It is a full-blown roster shakeup that puts a young first-rounder right in the center of the spotlight.
Montgomery's noncommittal update
Head coach Jim Montgomery refused to give fans a clear answer when asked about Tucker's status before Monday night's preseason game. The coach admitted the situation is serious but offered no specific date for a return. "It's more than day-to-day, but we don't have a timeline yet because we think he'll be re-evaluated in a couple days," Montgomery said. That vague timeline creates a massive opening for someone else to step up immediately. The team needs a body on the ice, and they have a specific player they have been waiting to test.

Jiricek gets his shot at the big leagues
If Tucker cannot play, the organization will likely turn to Adam Jiricek. The Czech blueliner was the Blues' first-round pick, 16th overall, in the 2024 NHL Draft. There has been so much chatter about him this offseason that the team seems ready to see if he can handle the speed of the NHL. Jiricek is officially earmarked for the AHL this season, but injuries change plans fast. Last year in the OHL, the Brantford Bulldogs saw him play 55 games while tallying 19 goals and 59 points. Those numbers are impressive, but they do not guarantee success against grown men in the pros. The Blues need to see if his game translates to the highest level, and Tucker's injury provides the perfect test.
Tucker remains the safer bet
Even if Jiricek makes the team, fans should not write off Tyler Tucker just yet. He brings over 150 games of NHL experience and stands 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds. He is the kind of physical presence teams love in a seventh or eighth defenseman role. He will not light up the scoresheet, but he knows the league and he knows how to play the game. The Blues know exactly what they have in Tucker, while Jiricek is still a question mark.
