UConn Eyes Charleston Center Chol Machot as Potential Transfer Addition
The No. 2 seed UConn Huskies' NCAA Tournament run ended in the national championship game, where they fell to the No. 1 Michigan Wolverines . It was a disappointing finish to Dan Hurley's eighth season leading the program. Still, the Huskies went 34-6 and remained one of college basketball's top teams.
In the offseason, many programs, including UConn, have turned their attention to the transfer portal. So far, the Huskies' portal class ranks 23rd in the nation, with two players added and five departed. As player movement continues to heat up, Hurley and his staff are keeping their options open.
On Monday, On3's senior national recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw reported the Huskies are one of several teams linked to former Charleston Cougars center Chol Machot.
"I am told that Machot will visit Georgetown on Tuesday, will host Zoom meetings with UConn and Syracuse this week, and is in the process of working on a date with Virginia Tech," Shaw wrote.
Machot put together a solid sophomore season with the Cougars. He appeared in 32 games and made 15 starts while averaging 8.9 points , 5.5 rebounds and 0.2 assists. He also shot 59.2% from the field and 27.3% from the 3-point line.
His efforts on the court led to some high honors. The redshirt sophomore was named the Coastal Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year.
With two more years of eligibility, it's not a major surprise Machot is garnering so much attention. The On3 industry rankings list him as the No. 147 player and the No. 14 center to enter the transfer portal this offseason.
If UConn can land his commitment, he would be its third addition in the portal, potentially joining forward Nik Khamenia ( Duke Blue Devils) and forward Najai Hines (Seton Hall Pirates).
