Despite some viewing him as a first-round prospect in the 2026 NBA Draft, Braylon Mullins announced he would be returning to UConn for the 2026-2027 college basketball season. The former five-star recruit admitted the decision was not as difficult for him as some might have expected.
Following one of his first spring practices since losing the 2026 National Championship Game, Mullins opened up on his recent decision process. Like everyone else, the 20-year-old said he discussed it with his family , but admitted he had his "mind set" on returning for his sophomore season.
"Just going through the process after the season ended and talking with family, I thought it was the best decision," Mullins said, via Steven Pappas of NBC Connecticut. "I kind of had my mind set out for it. Just had to make the decision, I think that was the part that's hard for everybody. I thought I made the best decision."
Mullins averaged 12.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game in his freshman campaign. The former Mr. Indiana Basketball ended his inaugural season in Storrs as a first-team Big East All-Freshman guard.
Although Mullins is a returning player, his announcement was some of the best news UConn could have received in the offseason. Coming off yet another national title run, the Huskies added former Duke five-star recruit Nikolas Khamenia and ex-Seton Hall big man Najai Hines to a roster that is very much in transition.
Dan Hurley is still tasked with replacing veterans Alex Karaban, Tarris Reed Jr. and Solo Ball, after the latter was ruled out for the entire 2026-2027 season . Mullins will be the preseason favorite to be UConn's leading scorer as a sophomore and will be on the shortlist for every relevant preseason award watchlist.
