UNC adds talented Wisconsin wide receiver via transfer portal

2026 isn't even a week old, but the transfer portal is rampant in college football. One might say more active than Santa Claus during the holidays.

For a team like North Carolina , portal additions are crucial in terms of future success. The Tar Heels added 70 new players to their 2025 roster , with several of those transfers earning starting roles.

On Monday afternoon, UNC added Wisconsin wide receiver Trech Kekahuna via the transfer portal. Kekahuna is the second former Badger to choose Chapel Hill as his 2026 destination, joining quarterback Billy Edwards.

Despite the Badgers' second-consecutive losing campaign – in their third season under head coach Luke Fickell – Kekahuna showcased his versatility as a valuable asset in Madison. Kekahuna caught 26 passes for 211 yards, ran the football 14 times for 129 yards and a touchdown, while adding 142 yards on kick returns.

Kekahuna fills a massive hole for North Carolina at WR2. Kobe Paysour utilized his final season of eligibility in 2025, while Javarius Green is curently in the portal. Behind breakout star Jordan Shipp , the Tar Heels ' pass-catching depth is extremely thin.

Outside of freshman running back Demon June, UNC lacked the versatility Kekahuna will provide it this fall. June recorded a Tar Heels-best 464 rushing yards, added 159 receiving yards and three total touchdowns.

With Davion Gause in the transfer portal and Caleb Hood retired, North Carolina could benefit from utilizing Kekahuna in a Swiss Army Knife-type role – like June.

Regardless of how the Tar Heels utilize Kekahuna, his addition is a massive win for Bill Belichick entering Year Two in Chapel Hill.
