- UNC football lands commitment from linebacker out of transfer portal
The North Carolina Tar Heels have been very active in the transfer portal so far, making some key additions to their roster. After a disappointing first year under Bill Belichick, UNC needs to find a way to improve and that starts with the transfer portal.
On Saturday, the Tar Heels made another addition out of the portal, and this time it was on the defensive side of the football. The Tar Heels received a commitment from Syracuse linebacker Derek McDonald , who will stay in the ACC but now play in Chapel Hill.

McDonald visited UNC just a few days ag,o and it was enough to get a commitment for the Tar Heels.
The Atlanta, Georgia native played four seasons at Syracuse and finished with 161 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an interception. His best season came in 2023 when he had 63 tackles and 2.5 sacks for the Orange.
With UNC losing some talent on the defensive side of the ball, getting a linebacker like McDaonald should certainly help them.
