The focus for the North Carolina Tar Heels football program now will be on roster construction. That starts with the transfer portal.
While it doesn't officially open up until early January, players can declare their intentions early on. We have already seen a handful of UNC players say they will enter the portal, and on Friday, another name will do so.
Quarterback Max Johnson plans on entering the transfer portal after just two seasons at North Carolina. He's the latest player on offense at a skill position to do so, joining wide receiver Chris Culliver . Johnson transferred to North Carolina in 2024 from Texas A&M along with his brother Jake Johnson .
After winning the starting job last season, Johnson suffered a season-ending injury in the win over Minnesota. He had to have surgery before returning this season. He lost the starting job to Gio Lopez but was able to appear in a few games.
Johnson completed 62.1 percent of his attempts for 432 yards, two tuchdowns and zero interceptions this season for UNC.
