UND's breakout freshman Greyson Uelmen among five players entering transfer portal
Mar. 23—GRAND FORKS — For the third year in a row, UND's leading scorer will enter the transfer portal.
Redshirt freshman Greyson Uelmen intends to enter the portal when it opens on April 7, according to
Joe Tipton of On3 Sports.
The 6-foot-2 guard and former walk-on had a breakout season for the Fighting Hawks, averaging 16.8 points per game. Uelmen scored 587 points, setting a new freshman scoring record for the program.
Uelmen made 34 starts and averaged 27.8 minutes per game this year.
Uelmen took his play up a notch in the postseason. He scored 41 points against Denver in the Summit League tournament, setting a tournament freshman single-game scoring record. Uelmen averaged 31 points in the Hawks' three tournament games.
Uelmen is the fifth UND player to declare for the transfer portal.
Freshman guard Anthony Smith III, freshman Marley Curtis, junior forward George Natsvlishvili and redshirt sophomore Matthew Bothun each plans to enter the transfer portal.
Each of the four primarily came off the bench this season.
Between graduating seniors and the exiting transfers, the Hawks will have to be busy in the portal this offseason. Of the eight players who scored more than 100 points this year, only one — Zach Kraft — is slated to return next year.
Two of UND's starters were seniors. Uelmen and Kraft were the other two. The fifth starter, junior center Josh Jones, has not publicly said whether he will enter the portal.
This is not uncharted territory for the Hawks. Five of the six leading scorers in 2024-25 either declared for the transfer portal or graduated.
UND is not the only Summit League team facing mass portal departures.
North Dakota State, the conference's regular season and tournament champions, has had three of its top-five scorers declare for the transfer portal.
Junior guard Damari Wheeler-Thomas leads the list. The junior guard averaged 14.5 points per game this season.
Junior Noah Feddersen and sophomore Treyson Anderson, both lengthy forwards, are also heading to the portal.
