Luis Suárez left the door open for one final Uruguay World Cup call, but Marcelo Bielsa has effectively closed it by leaving him out of the 2026 squad.
This is not just another veteran missing a tournament. This is Uruguay moving on from its record scorer on the sport's biggest stage.

The decision feels cold because Suárez had made himself available again. It also feels logical because Uruguay's squad now belongs to a different generation.

Luis Suárez World Cup omission confirms Uruguay shift
Yahoo Sports reported that Uruguay named its World Cup squad without Suárez, despite his recent willingness to reverse international retirement if needed.
Bielsa did not offer a long public explanation for the omission in the squad announcement. The message came through the list itself, with Darwin Núñez , Rodrigo Aguirre and Federico Viñas selected as the forward options.
Suárez retired from international football in September 2024 as Uruguay's all-time leading scorer. He had not played for the national team in roughly 20 months, but said this month that he would never refuse if Uruguay needed him.

That made the final call feel like a real ending. Suárez has played in four World Cups, but the fifth now looks gone.
Marcelo Bielsa backs younger Uruguay World Cup forwards
The football logic is clear, even if the emotion is heavy. Suárez is 39, and Bielsa has built Uruguay around energy, pressing and younger legs.
Núñez made the squad despite limited club minutes in Saudi Arabia , where Al-Hilal's foreign-player registration reshuffle affected his role after Karim Benzema arrived. That selection says Bielsa still values his movement, pace and physical threat.
Uruguay also included Premier League names such as Manuel Ugarte , Rodrigo Bentancur and Santiago Bueno . Federico Valverde , Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez give the squad an experienced core without turning back to Suárez.

Suárez still had form on his side. He has been productive for Inter Miami , scoring six MLS goals in 11 league appearances this season.
Uruguay open Group H against Saudi Arabia on June 15, then face Cape Verde and Spain . Bielsa clearly wants the focus on the players in camp, not on a farewell tour.
That is the painful part. Suárez did enough in his career to deserve every tribute, but Uruguay's World Cup future is now moving without him.
