Team USA survived a FIBA Women's World Cup nail-biter against Italy, winning 55-52, the advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday, Sept. 6.
The Americans got out to a hot start in the first quarter, but the Italians, in their second group-play game in Berlin, Germany, brought all the energy and defensive pressure. The U.S. had few answers for Italy's zone. Not a single player saw double figures until the fourth quarter. The first 3-pointer of the game didn't come until the third quarter.
Jackie Young led Team USA with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Angel Reese was right behind with eight points, three rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
For Italy, Cecilia Zandalisni did the heavy lifting. She had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Third quarter: USA 42, Italy 39
Whew. Hold on to your hats, folks. Sunday's Italy vs United States matchup feels like a title bout. The teams are going basket for basket after the U.S. couldn't contain Italy's third-quarter push. Team USA leads just 42-39, thanks to a huge 3-pointer from Paige Bueckers at the 1:48 mark; that was the first of the day from those in the red, white and blue.
Italy still owned the period, 15-12. Cecilia Zanadalisini leads the field with 14 points. No United States player is in double figures, and the team is shooting just 27% from the floor.

Surprisingly, Caitlin Clark is 0-for-6 from the field and has no assists with under two minutes left in the third. Clark has one point.

I think we're playing physically; we're just making too many errors. We're making too many mistakes," Lawson said at halftime. Italy's playing with great force. We knew they would. It's forced us into a lot of unforced errors."
Halftime: USA 30, Italy 24
The United States has its hands full trying to keep Italy at bay. It leads by six at halftime. The lead grew to double digits multiple times, but Italy came right back, going on a 14-6 run over the final 6 minutes, 45 seconds of the period.
Angel Reese leads the U.S. with six points, two blocks and a steal, and three other players have four points each. The United States is shooting 32% and Italy 31% from the floor.
For Italy, it scored 16 points in the second quarter to cut the deficit down to single digits. Much of that work came from Cecilia Zandalasini, who leads all scorers with nine points. Zandalasini does have three fouls (the limit is five in FIBA play), so Italy will have to figure out a way to keep its star out of foul trouble.

End of Q1: USA 18, Italy 8

Italy shot 21% in the first quarter and had eight turnovers. Jasmine Keys led the group with four points.

Reese already has a steal and two blocks in under three minutes of action.

A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum out of World Cup
The U.S. women's national team roster originally featured four-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson and five-time All-Star Kelsey Plum, but both were ruled out four days before the World Cup began due to "health reasons." "We'll miss being around them ... We wish them both a speedy recovery," Kara Lawson said on Sept. 1. "But we don't have time to be worried about who's not here."
Lawson says team will focus on chemistry and building with the players on the floor. A pair of young Washington Mystics in Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen are replacing replace Wilson and Plum.
