The last matchup between the USMNT and Paraguay proved to be one of the more intense friendlies the squad has recently witnessed, capped off by the Americans pulling out a gritty 2-1 victory. They won the game on a clutch 70th-minute strike from Folarin Balogun following a stellar early start by Gio Reyna , securing a massive confidence boost as they gear up for their first home World Cup match in 32 years.
Paraguay will head into Los Angeles making their first FIFA World Cup appearance since 2010. Still, they managed to pull off a shock upset victory against Mexico late last year, furthering the narrative that they'll still have some of the most dynamic playmakers on the pitch in Miguel Almirón and Julio Enciso giving them a chance in this group stage.

Keys to USA vs. Paraguay Matchup
There isn't much Paraguay could have done better during the opening minutes of their last friendly against the USMNT , seemingly convincing the prediction markets that they could pull off an upset. Their early 9th-minute equalizer from Álex Arce was a stunning response, showcasing their counter-attacking speed. However, they came out in the second half noticeably undisciplined and eventually went down a man after Omar Alderete 's red card. Once the Americans were able to exploit the wider spaces, Paraguay had a difficult time regaining any sort of momentum against the organized US midfield.

For the USMNT, Folarin Balogun was their spark plug in that matchup, and he's making a great case to be the tournament's breakout star if the Americans can secure a deep run. After a somewhat quiet stretch in recent international windows, Balogun showed up big with the game-winning 70th-minute strike against the Paraguayans, boasting a blistering conversion rate on his touches inside the box. If he can replicate this kind of clinical finishing in the Group D opener, it'll be impossible for Paraguay to hold the United States down from all angles.
The major issue with Paraguay has been their ability to maintain their shape for a full ninety minutes, and they've looked noticeably sluggish after beginning matches with high intensity. Miguel Almirón is constantly covering massive ground for the squad, currently seeing the highest usage rate of his international career to drive their transitional play. For Almirón and Paraguay to truly become giant-killers and shift their implied probability on platforms like Kalshi or Polymarket, they'll have to keep their energy high while providing defensive support for their premier playmaker.
The United States is still heavily favored to top Group D despite the notable struggles of Christian Pulisic in their recent 2-1 friendly loss to Germany and the occasional defensive lapses from the backline. Ultimately, the USMNT will be playing on home soil at SoFi Stadium, and while the fans may expect a comfortable opening victory, the Americans should look to assert dominance ASAP and not risk giving an opportunistic Paraguay side any early momentum.
USA vs. Paraguay Prediction & Pick
That recent friendly defeat to Germany has to be the biggest gut punch the USMNT has felt all year, and with how visibly driven Christian Pulisic has been throughout this World Cup buildup, we can expect the most motivated version of the Americans ahead of their Group D tilt at home.

Not only was the loss demoralizing, but the effort to match the intensity of top-tier opponents also has to have Paraguay feeling the pressure ahead of this opener. The USMNT has been able to handle everything South American squads throw at them recently, so it'll be interesting to see if they become truly dominant once Weston McKennie and Folarin Balogun show up in this tournament.
Still, I think this group stage opener is far from a guaranteed walkover for the United States, and Paraguay should be highly motivated to pull a shock upset on foreign soil. The USMNT has the recipe for completely dominating the Paraguayans on both sides of the pitch, but it'll take two full halves of focused football for them to remain unstoppable and secure a commanding victory.
Final USA-Paraguay 2026 World Cup Prediction & Pick: USA (-110); Under 2.5 (-160)
