The Vancouver Canucks appeared to be settling into the early weeks of the 2026-27 season, but on Wednesday, the organization made a roster decision that caught many off guard. Aatu Räty has been placed on waivers.
The move immediately sparked debate among Vancouver's fanbase. Räty, still a young player with upside, is the type of asset that rival teams could be eager to scoop up for nothing. Placing him on waivers means any of the other 31 NHL clubs can claim him before he would be eligible to pass through to the minor leagues.
That risk is exactly what has supporters of the team feeling uneasy. The general sentiment online was one of confusion, with many questioning why the Canucks would expose a player of Räty's caliber rather than explore a trade to ensure they receive something in return.
Some wonder if the move has been made to make room on the roster for an injury return, perhaps for Filip Chytil, who started off the season on the sidelines. However, the almost unanimous feeling is that Raty will likely be claimed.
It remains to be seen whether Räty will clear waivers or if another team will put in a claim. Given his age and potential, he could realistically be picked up, which would mean Vancouver loses him outright without any compensation.
The Canucks have not publicly commented on the reasoning behind the decision. It is possible the move is tied to cap management, a numbers game with other players earning roster spots, or part of a broader plan that is not yet visible from the outside.
The waiver wire will be one of the most closely watched transactions of the week. If Räty clears, he would likely report to Vancouver's AHL affiliate. If he does not, the Canucks will have to answer for a gamble that backfired early in the season.
In other waiver news on Wednesday, the San Jose Sharks also placed forward Alex Barre-Boulet on the wire while center Harrison Scott, who landed on there yesterday by the Dallas Stars, cleared.
