As the saying goes, "love conquers all." However, in the real world, especially when a relationship involves a celebrity who earns millions of dollars, the situation becomes more complicated than that. This is where a prenuptial agreement comes into play, and it has proven helpful in protecting the parties' assets, especially when the marriage goes sideways.
However, in the relationship between Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant and Vanessa Laine , the 6'6" wingman was apparently so smitten with the 18-year-old that he rebuffed calls for a prenup to be agreed upon before their wedding.
A curious start
It's well known that Kobe spent every waking hour perfecting his skill set and improving his game. However, during his younger years, he made room to explore his other passions, which apparently included his love for hip-hop music. It was in that setting that he met Vanessa, who appeared in Tha Eastsidaz's "G'd Up" music video.
For Kobe, it was certainly love at first sight. And before long, he was in constant communication with the then-17-year-old. He certainly wasn't shy about expressing her fondness for the Latina beauty, sending roses to her school and boldly picking her up in his sleek Mercedes-Benz sports car.
Already an NBA All-Star at the time, he spoiled her with designer clothes and, later on, a massive and insanely expensive engagement ring. However, as lovey-dovey as the two were, everything wasn't well on the outside. For one, there was the matter of Vanessa's age.
"He was an adult, and she was only 17, and it was like, hey, wait a minute," Stephen Laine, Vanessa's stepfather, told the Los Angeles Times.
A prenup was discussed
As Kobe and Vanessa headed towards marriage, conversations about a prenup soon popped up. It was standard fare considering the Lakers' status.
"We'd been going back and forth for months over a prenuptial agreement," Laine shared.
However, negotiations for one abruptly ended when Vanessa came home one day and told them that Kobe did not care for one at all.
"She just came home one day and said something to the effect that Kobe didn't want a prenup," Laine remembered. "That he loved her too much."
The wedding eventually pushed through in April 2001 at the St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point. However, the wedding was intimate. Oddly enough, the guest list was barren, and none of the usual suspects when it came to weddings were around. Kobe's parents or any of his sisters attended. No teammate was around. On Vanessa's side, neither of her close cousins, Laila and Sasha, was invited.
Laila later learned that Vanessa bore the burden of being a celebrity's wife. No longer was she the pretty yet feisty young lady who used to work at the mall; she was Kobe Bryant 's wife. Period.
"I remember at one point she had this sort of identity crisis," Laila shared . "She told me she was starting not to know who she was anymore, other than the wife of Kobe Bryant."
The Bryants' marriage was far from ideal, and it endured its fair share of rocky moments, especially when Kobe was accused of rape. However, much like the Lakers' superstar overpowered whatever defense was in front of him, they powered through challenges, and the relationship remained in a good place until Kobe's tragic passing in January 2020.
